Chase Briscoe Slapped with Massive Penalty Early in 2025//NASCAR News Daily

The Story

Bad news for Joe Gibbs Racing fans, as Chase Briscoe and the 19 team start off the year on the worst note possible by being caught with an illegal modification to the spoiler base found after Briscoe's car was taken to R&D following the race weekend. After a promising weekend that started with the coveted Daytona 500 Pole Position on Wednesday and a 4th place run in the Daytona 500 on Sunday, it has all been unraveled with one massive mistake by James Small and the team.

JGR Defense Statement

As quoted by FOX Sports, Joe Gibbs Racing will appeal the penalty and their statement was "The issue in question was caused in the assembly process when bolts used to attach the spoiler base to the deck lid caused the pre-drilled holes to wear due to supplied part interferences." JGR will appeal this penalty on the base that parts they received were less than ideal.

The Penalty in Question

The harsh penalty for the 19 team includes the following:

-Loss of 100 drivers' points

-James Small suspended for 4 races

-Loss of 10 playoff points

What's Next?

Chase Briscoe now sits 89 points below the playoff cutline at an astounding -67 points, he has a steep climb to make in the remaining 25 regular season races before the playoffs begin in September. It's not impossible to overcome, but its going to be really difficult.

My Thoughts

For a team that was reeling off a very disappointing end to the Martin Truex Jr era in 2023 and 2024, this is a massive suckerpunch and a possible season-altering penalty to be punish this harshly by NASCAR. In addition, James Small's already less than ideal reputation is going to take an even bigger hit if this penalty does indeed stands. It's a shame that a promising run gets ruined like this by the team.
