species name:
Kemonaku
species name meaning:
Taken from the Japanese words Hiyaku, 'soar' and Kemono, 'beast'.
species appearance:
The Kemonaku has a canine appearance, having fur, floppy ears, a long snout, and paws. A set of feathered wings lay at it's side as talons replace it's front paws. Two larger set of deer-like ears are placed on top of its head as a mane runs from it's neck to it's back before forming a tail. The Kemonaku comes in many different earthy colors, usually browns, greys, and black. But they can also vary from a bright reddish chestnut, blackish blue, and a creamy white.
Their eyes are usually brown or dark blue but green, hazel and grey are all acceptable colors, though rather rare. It has four sharp canine teeth that can swiftly break through the skin of another animal and their talons have razor sharp claws attached to them. Their talons are great for grabbing prey from off the ground and gripping onto tree branches.
species habitat:
Kemonaku's live high up in the mountains, in spots where trees and caves are located. Their fur protects them from the harsh cold making it easy for them to live in snowy areas. Thick trees are usually what Kemonaku's look for when making a den but caves are also useful for nesting in. Some will even make a den by packing in ice and snow to make a cave like structure.
species abilities:
The Kemonaku can soar with its huge wings and they use their talons to claw and grab things. When in serious danger the Kemonaku will create a special acid with their saliva and try to bite the victim to infect them. The acid isn't strong but it's enough to create an uncomfortable burning sensation in the wound.
species prey:
Since Kemonaku are smaller creatures they tend to hunt for smaller animals like rabbits, mice, snakes, moles, voles, and gophers. But they do enjoy insects, fish, and nuts.
species predators:
Kemonaku's are usually prey if injured since they're usually quick to fly away from danger. But they can fall prey to grizzly bears and wolf packs.
species habits:
Kemonaku's are well known for soaring the sky and perching on the branches of trees. They also love playing in the snow and will sometimes pounce head first into it like a fox.
species noises:
A Kemonaku can growl, bark, howl, grunt, snort, huff, whimper, squeal, yelp, yowl, and warble.
species communication:
Kemonaku's usually use movements to talk to each other through they are more vocal when they can't see each other. They can't speak any human language but they are known to befriend them and adapt to some of their movements.
species subspecies:
To be decided
species history:
The Kemonaku was created by the migration of many animals moving to different locations before breeding with each other. These successful breeding made the Kemonaku, a flying bird dog. This species then became it's own population, staying in the mountains and snoozing in the caves of it. Many Kemonaku befriend human travelers that make their way into the mountains, helping them hunt and warming them up. They enjoy a companion and never attack without a reason.
species sociality:
Kemonaku's tend to live in packs but it's not unusual for them to live by themselves with just one other companion. Younger, inexperienced packs live with one male leader and three to four females. A older more experienced pack has two to three males with 6 to 8 females, with at least two expecting pups. Kemonaku's aren't very territorial and actually move around quite a lot. Their territory sizes depend on the size of their packs and they never overlap with others. When spring, Kemonaku's usually only have three to five pups, most of them surviving until winter. All of the pack hunt except for the mothers and heavily expecting Kemonaku's.
species breeding:
Kemonaku's give live birth and are pregnant for about two months. They nurse the pups until they are old enough to have food regurgitated to them. Pups can leave the pack when they are at least a year old and can officially hunt and defend themselves.
