On my DeviantArt page I have a story that shows the secret home-life of Kevin Low.
The long and short of it is that Kevin's father is an abusive drunk who has been secretly beating Kevin nearly every night sence the kid was 5 or so. And Kevin, he learned early on how to hide this fact from everyone. Along with the phisical abuse, he was also subjected to verbal and emotional abuse that has left him with a very low opinion of his self worth. When Corriander came along, things slowly got better. He had people who actually cared about him as well as a place to stay so he didn't have to go home too often. But he did still go home from time to time.
When Lex was given the order to act as Kevin's bodyguard, he wasn't happy about it at all. He saw no reason why he should have to babysit some pathetic little human. He was even more aggravated when he was told that, instead of clocking out for the night and sleeping at Corriander's, he had to go all the way back to Kevin's rundown, ramshackle house and keep watching him.
When he arrived, Lex saw through the grimy window as scrawny, 4ft 4in Kevin was once again beaten by his drunk, 6ft 2in, broad shouldered father. Even Lex, with his true blue Albien mindset, found the scene before him to be a bit much. Albien giants are far from saints, they practically live for dealing out cruelty and torture, but it was a bit different with family. When an Albien child is born, their parents will either accept them and raise them as a parent should, or they'll reject the child, either abandoning them or killing them out right. A parent beating on their child repeatedly was crossing a line even Lex felt a little uncomfortable with.
In the end he had stepped in and stopped the beating(partially because the control collar around his neck compelled him to) but afterwards, he saw a side of Kevin he'd never known could be there. At first Kevin spoke with strength, even as he shakaly stood up and leaned against the wall for and never made eye with Lex. It was like he was ashamed, but at the same time he ordered Lex not to continue attacking his father(who was unconscious by this point). Lex didn't understand, why would the kid NOT want a little payback for the beating? After, Lex followed Kevin up to his room. Lex was a bit behind, so by the time he reached Kevin's room, Kevin was in the process of taking off his signature hoody and the shirt underneath it. All Lex could do was stare at the wide array of scars and bruises, even a line of cigarette burns leading up the full length of Kevin's spine, and a particularly nasty scar on Kevin's shoulder that looked like someone had staged him multiple times with broken glass and the Kevin had done his best to stitch it up himself. When Kevin saw that Lex was standing there, that he had seen, he had quietly begged the giant not to tell anyone, especially Corriander. In the end, Lex had agreed, though agian he didn't understand why. And he continued to be confused by all this, especially when Kevin went to bed(curling up into a tense fetal position like always) Lex went over, sat down, and started using his little used healing gift to ease Kevin's pain and mend his cracked bones and other ailments. Lex spent that night, and all that followed, questioning why he did this, why Kevin took the beatings and ordered Lex not to interfere, why Lex the healed Kevin every night as the little human fell asleep, why he kept his promise and didn't tell anyone, but most of all, why did he even care? Lex can never solve these questions of his, and usually winds up falling asleep with A shrunken(he realized the kid feels more relaxed when tinny in a giant's hands for some reason) Kevin restin on his chest, a protective hand over top him.
