INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 2 (2013) Review

There are no limits to the events and phenomena that parapsychology is interested in. Because in out-of-body experiences, for example, in astral travel, you may enter the realm of the 'in-between' spirits that are parallel to the current real world and never come out again... Or you may open a door to evil forces that want to from there to the real world and possess a body again. You may experience a coma; you may get lost in the darkness. You never know what kind of beings will visit your family through the door you opened at night.

When parapsychology is combined with classical ghost stories in art, the characters (victims and those who help the victims) consist of special people with strong paranormal perceptions, clairvoyance. Like the of the Lambert family... Father Josh (Patrick Wilson) was haunted by the ghost of an evil old woman (?) in his childhood.

About a quarter of a century later, when Dalton (Ty Simpkins), the middle child of Josh and his wife Renai's (Rose Byrne) three children, cannot return from astral travel and falls into a coma, medium Elise (Lin Shaye) and her two assistants will step in to save him... While Dalton is being saved, the evil old woman will kill Elise and take over Josh's body. This was the first part of the story.

Director-writer James Wan and writer-actor Leigh Whannell began working together in 2000 with the horror film Stygian. Their partnership, which became famous with the short and feature-length films Saw and continued with Insidious, has now matured. Meanwhile, Wan's masterful work in The Conjuring without Whannell in between the two Insidious films has elevated him to the rank of a director whose every work is intriguing.

The duo, in "Insidious: Chapter 2", are moving on to a much more complicated horror process compared to the first one, where the timeline can be moved back and forth.

This time, the film, in an extra way, winks at "The Shining", and positions the danger / killer inside, in the spirit of the father of the house. The prologue includes young Elise, who is invited to the house by her mother to help little Josh in 1986, and detects the presence of the evil old woman(?)... This key scene already makes you feel what kind of a movie you are entering. Imagine that you are given the end of a long rope in the first scene. You proceed by winding the rope around your hand; but you are in the dark, you cannot see in front of you; there are only what the trail you follow brings you: Terrifying images, surprise developments, shocking moments!

In the Spirit Zone, where mental and spiritual leaps can be made in time and space, everything seems complicated, but as we emphasized: Parapsychology has no boundaries. Key question: Who is this evil old woman (?) in Josh's body and why does she want to continue her existence in this body?

On the other hand, although it is possible to say that the story is difficult compared to the first part/film, we can claim that Wan's film draws the viewer in with its formal features and is effective like the dreams you see in REM sleep. It is like a horror festival where our breathing accelerates and our pulse beats increase: Just like in dreams, we are very scared in the house where we wander through objects, objects that may seem both very familiar and foreign, sometimes the red reflected from the stained glass but predominantly dark colors. When we into the region called 'The Beyond', we surrender to pitch darkness only except for the narrow area illuminated by the lanterns. It is as if we feel death: A dark nothingness. There is nothing!

For parapsychological horror enthusiasts, the cult film, as we always emphasize, is "The Entity", directed by Sidney J. Furie and starring Barbara Hershey, who has now taken on the role of Lorraine, Josh's mother, the grandmother of the "Insidious Zone". The film, which was based on real events, uses the scientific knowledge that parapsychology has accumulated to that day in the most accurate way.

Following in the footsteps of pioneering films such as "The Entity", Wan places parapsychology at the center and weaves elements of enriched ghost stories around it. And each time, he knows how to keep the audience's interest and attention alive by avoiding repetition as much as possible. In other words, the audience continues to pull the strings until the end.
