Prompt ;; Green
Somewhere, in the distance, a bird sang its first note, breaking the silence of the early morning. A gentle breeze carried itself across the land - ruffling the grass and stirring the trees, making them rise and fall. Dew lay like a heavy blanket over the woodland, making the air damp, and bringing the scent of pine up from the earth. The first rays of sunlight pierced the canopy above, beating down into the clearing and illuminating a lone deer grazing in the centre.
Logan watched from the treeline. He had been up since the early hours of the morning, scared of what demons might haunt him tonight - what ugly memory his brain decided to dig out and replay whilst all he could only watch. He could handle an all-nighter, he had decided, in the end.
He had needed a change of scenery and ultimately fled to the woods just beyond the estate. He often came back here, a sanctuary away from the mansion, which often felt all too suffocating. Here, there were no screaming kids, no overwhelming scent of multiple perfumes, and aftershaves in one room - just, nature. It had always been a comfort to him.
A snap of a twig. The deer raised her head.
“Careful, darlin’.” Logan murmured, low. He was crouched down, shifting closer to the deer in the clearing. She looked at him, eyes dark orbs of innocence, and had let him gently touch her hind.
Knuckles scraped against the velvet of her fur, and his eyes met hers. “Pretty one, ain't ya?” Logan had mused, hand slowly unfolding to press his palm to her back. He did this often, stalked a deer, and got close enough to touch her. He found a brief pause in it, a way to calm the raging sea in his mind and focus on the creature in front of him. Innocent, fragile. Much like most things in life.
And with that - she bolted, long legs eating up the distance, before she pushed through a bush and scrambled to the undergrowth. Logan's lip twitched up - he was surprised she stuck around as long as she did. She had been a fair distance from her herd in the first place.
His ear twitched then, picking up the distant ruffle of bed sheets and the faint patter of footsteps. Logan tilted his head over his shoulder, glancing back at the mansion, which he could just make out through the foliage. He grumbled under his breath, pushing to his feet and ignoring the metallic snap of his back. He stretched, arms above his head as he began to make his way back. He had training with summers today - that ought to be fun.
