Hey guys Steeb here once again and today for my first ever post for the Marvel Cosmic Club I’m going to be talking about one of the heroes in the Eternals movie, Dane Whitman or his alter ego, The Black Knight.

Beginnings

Believe it or not, Dane Whitman wasn’t actually the first character to take on the mantle of the Black Knight, it was actually a Knight of the Round Table named Sir Percy who served King Arthur wielding the Ebony Blade which was created by Merlin himself from a meteor. After Sir Percy was murdered several of his ancestors had the blade ed down to them one of those being Nathan Garrett. Unlike his ancestors Nathan wasn’t a a morally good person and the Ebony Blade deemed him unworthy to wield it. This led to Garrett using high tech weapons of his own ing Baron Zemo in fighting Hank Pym and Iron Man, eventually he is fatally wounded by the latter and this is where Dane Whitman comes in. His uncle escapes after Tony fatally wounds him asking his nephew to restore his families legacy which has been ruined by Garrett before dying.

The Avengers

Whitman unlike his uncle was deemed worthy by the Ebony Blade to wield it doing so with ease, however his first encounter with the Avengers was from pleasant, the mistook him for his uncle and attacked him. He later proved his worth however by infiltrating the Masters of Evil, the organisation his uncle was associated with. He is given provisional Avengers hip leading him to help them defeat Kang the Conqueror before he s the Avengers full time in recognition of his aid. He also helped Doctor Strange fight the extra-dimensional threat Tiboro from the alleged “Sixth Dimension.”

The Defenders, Captain Britain And The Blood Curse

Whitman was an early member of the defenders and also becomes their first casualty with the Enchantresses kiss petrifying him. His spirit is then drawn to the 12th century by the sorcerer Amergin the Druid deciding to stay there with fellow defender Valkyrie taking care of him. He eventually s the time travelling Avengers before returning to the 21st century and is then sent to locate the lost hero Captain Britain and with his aid travels to the otherworld dimension to save Camelot. Whitman eventually discovers the Ebony Blade is cursed as every time it draws blood it drives the closer to madness. Whitman then frees Sir Percy’s spirit from the blade removing the blood curse from the sword and proceeds to help his teammates Captain Marvel and Wasp and battles against the Masters of Evil. Namor the Sub-Mariner however revives the curse causing Whitman’s body to become the same material as the blade. Eventually Doctor Strange and Sir Percy stop the curse however Whitman leaves the Avengers and stops using the Ebony Blade.

Sersi And The Eternals

Whitman eventually res the Avengers even becoming the de facto field leader in Captain America’s absence. He eventually becomes romantically involved with Eternal Sersi, however his relationship then begins to come under strain as Sersi proves to be mentally unstable due to a man called the Proctor. In an attempt to stabilise her metal state, fellow eternal Ikaris mentally bonds Sersi and Whitman together with a process called “gann josin.” Whitman however is displeased by this as he starts to develop feelings for the Inhuman Crystal. Sersi eventually snaps and forces Whitman to aid her until the sight of the sight of her attacking crystal enables him to break free. Proctor is then revealed to be an alternate version of Whitman who has made it his mission to slay every version of Sersi in the multiverse as his Sersi rejected him. Eventually Sersi slays him with his own Ebony Blade but is subsequently forced to leave the Marvel Universe to clear her mind, Whitman ing her partly because he feels responsible for what happened to her and partly because he doesn’t want to get between Crystal and her husband Quicksilver. Eventually the 2 are separated and are returned back to the normal times after a string of events.

The Future

Whitmans future after his encounter with Sersi had many things going on, he ed a British group who hunts the supernatural called the MI13 and begins to lose his sanity again due to numerous things mainly, the fact that Captain America didn’t include him in his New Avengers roster. The future for Whitman in the MCU looks bright too with him being slated to appear in The Eternals Movie with Kit Harrington who is known for his role in the Game Of Thrones series as Jon Snow set to portray him. We don’t know too much but the possibility of Sersi’s insanity storyline could be explored as Kit has been seen on set kissing Gemma Chan who plays Sersi.
