"Chains of the Past"

Trigger Warning: Loss of a Spouse, Abuse of Children, Parental Separation, Inhumane Treatment of Loki’s children

Eons had ed since that fateful day when Odin, in his thirst for power and control, had obliterated everything Loki held dear. The day Angrboða had been killed, and with her, the only love Loki had ever known. It was a betrayal that cut deeper than any blade, for it was not just the loss of his wife, but the ruin of his children’s future—the destruction of their very souls at the hands of a father who never had the heart to be one.

It was during Ragnarok, the day Loki had feared most, when Odin's wrath became undeniable. He had begged, pleaded, screamed to leave his children in peace. But Odin, blinded by his unquenchable need for dominance, had ordered their capture. Thor, ever loyal, had stood by Odin’s side, a silent participant in the tragedy, though his heart had long been torn by the injustices his father had committed.

And there, in the darkness of the dungeon where Loki had been locked away, he had heard the cries of his children—his little ones—being taken. He had watched helplessly as they were dragged from their home, his own blood. A father's heart shattered in silence as the gods who claimed to be noble showed their true faces.

It was the day Loki had stopped speaking to Odin. The day the bond between father and son was severed for all eternity.

That was eons ago.

The grand hall of Asgard was bustling with energy. The air was thick with anticipation for Thor's coronation. The warriors, gods, and goddesses filled the room, waiting for the moment when Thor would finally ascend to his rightful place as king. His hammer hung at his side, a symbol of his strength and the faith the people had in him.

Yet, amidst the celebration, Loki stood alone. The once mischievous trickster god, now something far darker, his eyes cold and distant. His cloak billowed around him, his presence undeniable as he stepped forward, causing a hush to fall upon the assembled gods.

Thor’s gaze met his, but Loki's expression was unyielding, devoid of the camaraderie they had once shared. It had been years since they had truly spoken, and those years had forged a bitter divide.

Odin sat upon his throne, his eyes narrowed, as though sensing what was coming.

Loki raised his voice, and with it, the weight of centuries of suffering and rage.

“I hate you, Odin,” Loki's words were sharp, each syllable cutting like a dagger. “I want you dead. You took everything from me. You killed her. My wife. And you took my children.”

The gods froze, their eyes flicking between Loki and Odin. Thor’s mouth opened, but no words came.

“I told you,” Loki continued, his voice devoid of emotion, yet filled with an undeniable venom, “I told you that day—begged you to leave them alone. But you wouldn’t listen. You couldn’t. You were too blinded by your own arrogance.”

Odin, in all his wisdom and power, appeared shaken for the first time. “Why, Loki?” he asked, his voice breaking with desperation. “Why this hatred? What have I done to deserve such contempt from my own son?”

Loki scoffed, his lips curling into a bitter sneer.

“You want to know why?” Loki’s eyes locked onto Odin’s, burning with centuries of grief and anger. “You took my children. You killed my wife. What more do you need to hear? You are no father of mine, Odin. I renounce everything you have forced upon me. The title of prince of Asgard—take it and throw it into the void. I care not. Let someone else suffer under your tyranny.”

Thor’s hands trembled at his sides as he watched his brother, his heart breaking for both Loki and their fractured relationship. “Loki, please—” Thor began, his voice thick with emotion.

“No, Thor,” Loki cut him off, his eyes hardening. “You were always blind to it. You saw the truth, but you chose to ignore it. You saw how your father treated me, how he punished you for daring to see him for who he really was, but you did nothing. You let him throw me in the dungeon, let him break me into pieces. And now, after everything, you still stand there and try to convince me to care?”

Thor’s throat tightened, his voice cracking. “I never wanted to hurt you.”

Loki laughed, a hollow sound that echoed through the hall. “Hurt me? You were not the one who killed my love, who took my children and tortured them. You stood by and did nothing, and for that, I will never forgive you. You never understood what I went through.”

Odin rose from his throne, his posture regal, yet his eyes filled with an unspoken shame. “Loki, I did what I thought was best for Asgard. You—”

“Asgard?” Loki interrupted. “Asgard does not deserve your protection, Odin. You failed your people. You failed your children.”

Frigg, standing nearby, her face pale, looked between the two. She stepped forward, her voice soft yet firm. “Enough, Loki. You know Odin did what he thought was necessary.”

But Loki’s rage only grew. “What he thought was necessary? You think taking my children, locking them away, and punishing Thor for standing against him was necessary? I will never forgive him for what he’s done. And I will never forgive you, for you stood by and allowed it all to happen.”

Odin’s face hardened, a familiar flicker of pride rising. “I did what was right for Asgard!”

Loki's words cut deep. “Right for Asgard?” Loki echoed, his voice trembling with the weight of his sorrow. “What you did to me was never right, Odin. What you did to Thor was never right. You punished him for calling you out on your lies.”

Thor flinched at the accusation, but Loki continued, unrelenting. “And I was the one who paid for your sins. You locked me away. You took my family. You killed the one person I ever loved. And you expect me to bow before you, to acknowledge you as my father?”

Loki's gaze hardened as he turned toward the gods who were watching. His words burned through the room like fire.

“I swear before all the gods present, Odin, I am no longer a prince of Asgard. I renounce this title. I renounce this family. I renounce you.”

With that, Loki stepped back, turning away from his once-proud heritage. Thor’s heart shattered in that moment. He had lost his brother, not to war, but to the poison of his own father’s actions. Loki, the trickster, the one who once bent the rules of the world with a smile, now stood alone, a man broken and scarred by betrayal.

And for the first time in Thor’s life, he realized the full extent of the devastation that had been wrought by their father’s hand.

As Loki walked away, Frigg's voice reached him one last time. “I’m sorry, Loki. I’m so sorry for all that’s happened.”

But Loki did not turn around. He was done apologizing. Done with Asgard. Done with the gods who had failed him.

He was no longer Loki, the trickster.

He was Loki, the broken god.

And as his footsteps echoed through the hall, leaving his family behind, he whispered to no one but the empty air:

“May Asgard burn.”
