Challenge Season - drinks

I don’t drink a lot. Rarely in fact. But I do like owning Middle-earth related drinks. These are often available from New Zealand & I bought some while I did a Lord of the Rings tour of NZ 🇳🇿. I enjoy them as much for the uniquely themed bottles as for their delicious contents!

Hobbit Southfarthing Sackville Cider

This is available from Hobbiton (Matamata, NZ). I initially bought a 1L bottle and a smaller 500ml bottle while at Hobbiton.

Some time later, I acquired another two 650ml bottles as a special gift for my wife - these have wax seals on the caps.

Hobbit Southfarthing Frogmorton Ginger Beer

Also from Hobbiton, this 1L bottle is a fresh, crisp and spicy non-alcoholic beverage.

Hobbit Southfarthing Girdley Fine Grain Amber Ale

Not being a beer drinker, I’m not sure when I will get around to sampling this one, another offering from the Green Dragon at Hobbiton.

Middle-earth Rosé

I didn’t buy this wine on my visit, as the other bottles I had purchased took (pun intended!) up my customs alcohol limit. A friend who visited after me bought it back. It is available from the Hobbiton store or the Matamata iSite.

Harringtons Sobering Thought and Hobbit Stout Light

These bottles were bought in Queenstown NZ 🇳🇿 from an obscure little Middle-earth shop. Now not being a beer drinker, I still had to get these. They were the out of date remnants of stock provided to the cast who were drinking in scenes (eg Bilbo’s birthday celebration, and the Prancing Pony) to allow them to drink with some of the natural effects of alcohol, without getting intoxicated - as both are a low 1% alcohol content! I bought a fifth bottle that I sampled over there at the time.

Mead

This one is a bit of a stretch but I have to include my re-labeled bottle of mead.

While not licenced merchandise, the re-designed label is specifically related to Middle-earth and mead was mentioned in both the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit.

When I do drink any of these, it’s always from one of my Graham Anthony LotR pewter goblets 🥰

I know there are other boutique bottles out there, and I look forward to sampling and collecting them in the future!
