Of the Coming of the Elves

Hello, friends!

Here I am with my slightly delayed January poem, which is finally a Tolkien themed one! There's also a little artwork, which I wrote this poem for in the first place.

Now MK suggested to try writing in alliterative verse, so this is my wonky first attempt. I kinda liked it, actually. And I also wrote in split verse, the little pause being represented by two slashes (//), because amino's options for layout are limited.

Before the sun came sailing // and sent downwards her light

Before the moon came marching // his march across the sky

The world was filled with woes // the outer woods with beasts

Yet did not the holy hosts // bid halt to evil's greed

There, under light of stars // long awaited life awoke

At Cuiviénen's waters // the firstborn came to walk

The lands, that yet unnamed // laid long under the dark

But when they raised their gaze // hope ran through their hearts

And ever would they praise // the precious glow of stars

They wandered through the hills // named things that were not named

Yet some of them were lost // in evil's lair enchained

One day there came a rider // unlike all riders known

A lord on white a steed // more bright than winter's snow

The elves were shook with fear // deemed foul the truly fair

But soon they came to know // his softness and his care

Oromë then rode west // to tell the hosts his tale

Who, full of joy, then bade // the elves westwards to sail

Three mighty came and saw // the realm lit by the trees

In awe they called their kin // to come beyond the sea

The great march now began // and great it was indeed

Oromë was their leader // to lead through darkness' breed

Yet some refused to come // and others ran astray

And others who loved Ossë // at the outer shores remained

Thus now the elves were sundered // but soon they'd meet again

In joy not, nor in laughter // they'd meet in naught but pain

And doomed to fade away
