tips on being a good ally

Hello everyone! Cidney here back at it again with another post! Today we’re going to be talking about allies and how to be a good ally in the community.

, these aren’t the ONLY things you can do to be a good ally, but they’re good suggestions in my opinon.

So, without further ado, let’s get on with the post!

1. learn more about the community

Something as simple as learning more about different gender identities, sexualities, and much more can be a huge help to the community. It can help you and others understand more about what’s going on in the community, as well as maybe where your LGBT+ friends are coming from.

Don’t put pressure on yourself to learn absolutely everything about the community. You don’t have to know EVERYTHING to be a good ally. However, whenever you get the chance, take a few minutes and see if you can learn something new!

2. educate yourself on lgbt+ issues

While the LGBT+ community has made huge strides towards equality, there are still a lot of issues the community struggles with today. To help take a stand against discrimination, learning more about what’s going on inside of and outside of the community can be a major help!

Every little bit of info helps, no matter how big or small it is.

3. listen

One of the most important things that you can do to help is to just listen to those that are part of the community. Even if you don’t fully understand, just lending an ear to listen to how they feel and what they’re going through can make a huge difference.

Sometimes it takes time to understand things, and that’s okay. Listening is a big part, and I would say probably the most important thing anyone can do to the community and the people within it.

4. respect

Even if you might not understand everything in the community, just simply respecting the feelings and experiences of others can help a lot too. As I said before, sometimes it takes a while to understand things. And sometimes, you might not ever understand — and that’s okay. Just showing your and respect for the community can help tons!

5. be yourself

My fifth and final tip today would to be authentically and unapologetically yourself. Just because you’re an ally doesn’t mean that you don’t belong in the community. As of the LGBT+ community, it means a LOT when we have allies there to us and stand by our side. You give us strength to be ourselves — and that’s all we can ask of you.
