tillie walden is an american graphic novel author and cartoonist. she herself is lesbian and adds many characters that are part of the community into her works.

walden stated that she couldnt write in a character in the community before she was comfortable and out herself. she had written one before in she was out, in "the end of summer," but they were very quiet and hidden. i find this amazing because i think it shows how her characters progress with her life, especially because a good amount of her work is autobiographical.

walden's art is something that drew me to her work. it is whimsical and dreamy. she focuses on backgrounds, making them unique from space to jungles. everything is just so pretty to look at.

an inventive world, a breathtaking love story, and stunning art come together in this new work by award-winning artist tillie walden

:black_small_square: spinning

synopsis:

poignant and captivating, ignatz award winner tillie walden's powerful graphic memoir, "spinning," captures what it's like to come of age, come out, and come to with leaving behind everything you used to know.

it was the same every morning. wake up, grab the ice skates, and head to the rink while the world was still dark.

weekends were spent in glitter and tights at competitions. perform. smile. and do it again.

she was good. she won. and she hated it.

for ten years, figure skating was tillie walden's life. she woke before dawn for morning lessons, went straight to group practice after school, and spent weekends competing at ice rinks across the state. it was a central piece of her identity, her safe haven from the stress of school, bullies, and family. but over time, as she switched schools, got into art, and fell in love with her first girlfriend, she began to question how the close-minded world of figure skating fit in with the rest of her life, and whether all the work was worth it given the reality: that she, and her friends on the figure skating team, were nowhere close to olympic hopefuls. it all led to one question: what was the point? the more tillie thought about it, the more tillie realized she'd outgrown her ion--and she finally needed to find her own voice.

:black_small_square: a city inside

synopsis:

shifting between the everyday and the surreal, a city inside recounts one woman's life from childhood home, to the first love that she will never forget, to the creation of the idea of herself that she can grow old with and the home that she can grow old in.

walden's follow up to the lyrical "i love this part" is a poetic exploration of the process of growing older; the journey towards finding out who you are and building a life for yourself.

it is a universal story of how we don't just come-of-age once, but many times throughout our lives.

she has a few other graphic novels as well, but these are just a couple of her popular ones.
