Stand Out

Going into high school was fun last year.

It was a fresh start and no one really knew how messed up ‘Emily’ was.

From the first day I’d noticed a poster, it read:

Stand Out, help make the school a more inclusive place regardless of gender or sexuality.

It also read the room number.

At the start of high school I was thinking of who I was.

I got my only friend, at the time, to call me Alex.

Once the little meetings started things got fun!

So, at standout the year 8 coordinator (like the principal of the grade) was running it.

There was a couple of other teachers too.

At this stage last year, things at home were hard.

Stand out was a safe place for me to hangout with my friend.

I didn’t get teased there, the teacher asked everyone for their pronouns, and we all got to know each other.

(I didn’t really know many people there- Except for the band major of the marching band)

I stated the reason I was there, when she asked.

’I just want to learn more about the community and I was hoping I’d meet some people that are similar to me!’

I still go to this little club, once a week, every week, but it’s really fun.

We organise events, do stalls for the new students, host BBQs, and we organise fun dress up days!

The teacher that does it likes to check up on how everyone is going, and it’s really sweet.

So if your school doesn’t have a safe lil queer club, find the teacher you feel most comfortable with, maybe you can discuss your opinion.

I heard some places in America have a youth group sorta thing but it’s LGBT?

If your closest is super cosy, just see if you can organise a day out with a friend and maybe you two can pop in?
