Hello all you waffles, pancakes, and crepes!!

For today's post I'm entering the #Awarechall ! My post is on a cancer called Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma. I'll get into the questions and have some further explanation of what it is. Let's do it!!

:microscope: What was the topic? :microscope:

Liposarcoma is a type of cancer that happens in the light tissues of the body. Retroperitoneal refers to area of which the tumor is located, in this case it's located behind the peritoneum (aka: the abdominal lining).

This specific cancer affects approximately 1 in every 100,000 people and is most common in older adults although it can affect all ages.

~44% of people with the condition are asymptomatic for weeks if not years before the tumor presents.

After surgery to remove the tumor there is a ~19% recurrence rate and a ~16% death rate. Even with this success rate, surgery is the only recommended treatment readily available.

The average size of this tumor is ~18.5cm and they can weight over 30 pounds (13.6078 kilograms). With the size, ~ 68% of patients have a tangible tumor.

CT scans, MRIs, and biopsies are the most common ways to diagnose this cancer.

Due to the complexity of the cancer,

Nobody has figured out what exactly causes this condition. The best guess is that mutated cells attempt to get nutrients from the body and due to the mutation become a tumor.

:microscope: Why did you choose this topic? :microscope:

I'd like to be a medical researcher once I finish schooling and I think this a very important subject. Like I mentioned, this a deadly type of cancer that most people are not aware of until it's too late. People should be aware of this possibility before more people are misdiagnosed or pushed aside in a hospital.

:microscope: Why does this topic need awareness? :microscope:

Similar as to why I chose it, not many know about it and it's very deadly. I belive it needs awareness so that nobody has to be told they're "faking symptoms" or have to wait months for a diagnosis.

:microscope: If you are ionate about this, why? :microscope:

My grandmother was diagnosed with Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma after approximately 2 months of being in and out of facilities for tests. Spending almost 3 straight months in a hospital she died. I missed school, my parents missed work, we all slept on the waiting room chairs. The doctors told us there was nothing they could do and pushed us aside. No family should have to go through this. I'm ionate because I've seen it first hand.
