What Exactly is Happening?

although this is unenforceable, and just symbolic, it's sparked flames that have been added to the fire that is Poland's culture war.

History of Homophobia in Poland

Poland does not recognize same-sex relationships as legal, nor does it allow them to adopt.

According to a 2020 survey by ILGA-Europe, an international gay rights organization, Poland now ranks as the most homophobic country in the European Union.

Although the country doesn't see gender or sexuality as means of hate crimes, it also doesn't recognize same-sex relationships.

EU's Response

In response to these small town's claims, the European Parliament has declared the entirety of the EU as an 'LGBTQ Freedom Zone'

The resolution declares that "LGBTIQ persons everywhere in the EU should enjoy the freedom to live and publicly show their sexual orientation and gender identity without fear of intolerance, discrimination or persecution".

It also says "authorities at all levels of governance across the EU should protect and promote equality and the fundamental rights of all, including Lgbtq persons''
