What do I want to do?

I want to protect vulnerable villages and cities from the ever growing problem of flooding :ocean: .

This role usually comes down to being a hydrologist or flood management officer. Or even an environmental consultant in some places!

Why this job?

I love the environment. I've always been an outdoor girl and I knew from very little that I wanted to work in the environmental sector. I also live in the UK, which means that our only big natural disasters are from water, either too much, or not enough. Floods have ruined towns and cities up and down the nation. So this is the perfect route for me to take!

Studying

So... school, fun times for most :woman: 🏼‍ :mortar_board: .

I took the route of further education to get where I currently am. Although you likely don't need to go into further education, with apprenticeships available.

I did an undergraduate degree in Environmental Science, which meant that I have a range of environmental skills and knowledge to help me in further life. However, there are plenty of degree choices to choose from, you could go down the environment route and choose geography, geology, hydrology, probably even many more. Or maybe you're good with numbers and want to go down the engineering route, civil, environmental maybe even mechanical could help you on your journey.

This could be it. Finish university, and go find a job, yay!

But I'm not finished. Since I only did some hydrology modules in university I wanted to expand that, which is why I'm doing a postgraduate masters degree in Hydrology! This is a useful route if you're planning on switching from a near, but not identical field of study.

Inspiration

Honestly, I'm not really sure. I could say I was directly affected by flooding, but I'm not, I luckily live uphill from a river making my house thankfully safe.

However, I know people that are. And I know people that have been affected. Flooding ruins lives, and honestly, it's not studied enough. Thankfully more though goes into choosing house locations, but older houses are still vulnerable. Insurance doesn't always pay out, and people can lose a lot from these incidents.

Hopefully I can protect the areas that are currently vulnerable and also protect future areas.

Conclusion

A lot of people probably think this is a boring job. But to me, this science is super interesting. How water flows, what constrains it and where it will end up are just some topics that I find a lot of fun in studying.

This isn't a job for everyone, but the UK especially needs more of us.
