I’ve noticed that there’s a lot of misinformation going around about the meaning behind the flags and which are appropriate to use! Hope this post clears things out and answer any questions you may have about the subject.

Labrys Lesbian Flag (1999)

The labrys flag is the oldest lesbian flag. The labrys symbol (the axe) was used by the lesbian feminist movement in the 70′s, and in 1999 a gay male graphic designer named Sean Campbell put it with the triangle and the color purple, since all three have historical significance in the lesbian community.

The design involves a labrys superimposed on the inverted black triangle, set against a violet hue background. The labrys was used as an ancient religious symbol, and for other various purposes. In the 1970s it was adopted as a symbol of empowerment by the lesbian feminist community.

Since the triangle is meant to be Holocaust imagery, people are right to be uncomfortable using the labrys flag that has the triangle, so there are edits that include other things or just have the labrys symbol by itself. Some Jewish lesbians believe that the triangle is okay to exist on the flag as a reminder of the oppression we have faced in the past as well as an acknowledgement of contributions Jewish lesbians have made in the lesbian community.

Lastly, the flag is inclusive of trans women!

Lipstick Lesbian Flag (2010)

A lipstick lesbian is slang for a lesbian who exhibits a greater amount of feminine gender attributes relative to other gender expressions, such as wearing make-up (thus, lipstick), wearing dresses or skirts and having other characteristics associated with feminine women. In popular usage, the term lipstick lesbian is also used to characterize the feminine gender expression of bisexual women who are romantically or sexually interested in other women.

Featuring shades of pink, white and red, it is commonly used to represent lesbians – although some feel it represents only ‘lipstick’ or ‘femme’ lesbians. This likely stems from its original version. Created in 2010, it first featured a lipstick mark in its top left hand corner. While some still embrace the first version, others argue it and its subsequent version are butch-phobic, leading to variations in colour.

Some lesbians also oppose use of any flag revised from the lipstick original because its designer, Natalie McCray, reportedly wrote racist, biphobic and transphobic comments on a since-deleted blog.

New Lesbian Flag (2018)

After the lipstick lesbian flag, Tumblr blogger Emily Gwen created a design for a new lesbian flag in 2018. This flag retained the seven stripes from the lipstick flag, but changed the top set to orange shades.

Red : Gender non-conformity (=/= non-binary)

Orange : Independence

Light orange : Community

White : Unique relationships to womanhood

Light pink : Serenity and Peace

Following the Tumblr post where the 7-stripe design was voted on, a second version with a simplified five color design was introduced for artistic and commercial purposes.
