I sit on the couch, warm and gentle light surrounding me. Amber sits on the floor, her gaze interlocked with the book in her hand. I braid her hair easily, her long dark hair moving as I wish. I had done this a million times before and yet every time I do so she seems to forget that I need her head to be still. Her words seemed to become trapped in the cozy livingroom, finding no way to escape. The sound of the page turning a comforable and welcomed sound. She moves her head once more. "Amber, stOp moving your head. I dont know how I am supposed to braid your hair if you keep moving it-"
She turns around to look at me, moving her head again. I finally just let go of her long hair, giving up once and for all. "Its harder than it looks, really I promise. Besides I'm sure that I could braid your hair with you moving." She says undoing all my work. I let out a huff of air.
"Excuse me? I would like to see you try. My hair is not long enough yet and you have the patience of a rock." I say with a small chuckle. She smiles brightly as she stands up and dusts herself off.
"yET?"
She stares me down befor pushing me over to make more room on the couch. She takes my hair in her hands, a bit harsher than needed to prove her point. "Ow, ow, ow. Be careful wench." I say letting her pull and tug at my hair.
She gently slaps me on the shoulder. "I am no wench, goldie locks." I laugh, shaking my head softly.
"I have brown hair so I'm pretty sure that disqualifies me." I says simply, trying my best not to move my head for her from this point forward.
about a half an hour later
I had made a terrible choice letting her do this to me. There were a few braids scattered about in my hair, and at some point during it colorful bows came into play and I now looked like a rejected princess that had too many drinks and got her hands on not only scissors but bright pink bows. "I hate you." I tell Amber, studying the mess of hair that I have become.
She only grins, giving me a light peck on the cheek. "I love you too babe." She takes a deep breath. "Makeup time-"
✁・・・
I trudge up the stairs towards my apartment, my eyes were barely open at this point. I was ready to go to sleep. I pull out the key as I approach the dark door. But as soon as I try the key I find that it is already open. I stop moving for a moment, thinking of the possibilities it could be. I slowly push the wooden door open. Suprised just to see Amber standing there eating some popcorn. "Amber? What are you doing here? I have work tomorrow and I'm not exactly in the mood." I tell her simply.
She rolls her eyes. "No. I want to have a movie night. We haven't had one in a while and with your refusal of going to the local movie theaters I had to improvise." She says moving over to the makeshift concession stand. I shut the door chuckling. She had built a fort around the TV. Comprised of sheets and pillows, softly colored string lights lighting up the inside. She pulls me towards the kitchen where she has a makeshift concession stand waiting for me.
"My sunflower, I am not going to pay you for any of this." I tell her pointedly as I her to look at the wide range of selection of candies.
"I didn't expect you to, babe." She says wrapping her arms around me, giving me a hug from behind. "I was thinking we could watch something scary." She says with a sly grin. I look over to her, chuckling slightly.
I cant help but smile. "You know I do love horror, but you also know I do not like /your/ horror." I say grabbing candy.
She huffs, nodding. We walk back to the fort and climb in. It had a warm atmosphere, the abundance of pillows and covers making the area feel cozy. "Fine. A psychological thriller then it seems. Or would you rather do one of your pointless horror comedy shit-shows." She asks sitting beside me, she lays her head on my shoulder as she fiddles with the remote.
I scoff. "Hey. They are not shit-shows, the only thing that is a shit-show is your life." I say laughing softly.
"Ooh. Burn. I think I am going to have to go to the hospital. I would ask you to carry me but with those noodle arms I'm not even sure if you could lift me." She says selecting a movie.
I chuckle. "Ouch. That hurt. I'll take it though, because on many levels its true." I say returning my gaze to the tv.
✁・・・
I pick Amber up and practically throw her over my shoulder. I hold her like a sack of potatoes as I walk through the forest, the path worn out and weary. "Otto I swear to god, I will kill you if you dont put me down right now." She says holding onto whatever she could grab. The large river beside us gurgling as it ran and pushed violently through the rocks.
I grin happily. "Oh? What was that? You want me to spin? Okay." I spin around, returning back onto the path, now with her screeching for me to put her down. "This is what happens when someone complains about their feet hurting on a hike Amber. Family rule. And I am not sure," I pause a small moment, looking over at the river beside us. "But I'm actually /pretty sure/ you are going to be ing the family soon." I say laughing as we continue onward to our destination.
She gently hits my back, kicking slightly. "Let me go Otto. I am not apart of your crazy family just yet so it doesn't apply to me babe. Just put me down. I swear I won't complain until we get there. I promise." She says giving up. I shake my head. The path had become a bit rockier and the trees start to thin out as we approach the destination.
I sigh softly, we were nearly there and if I put her down now I was positive we would have to stop at least a billion more times for her. "I dont think so my dearest sunflower. It's just a bit further until I get to throw you off the edge of the waterfall." I say, I hear a gasp of suprise and I lot of cursing in another language before I finally put her down. "Your kinda hot when you get this kind of angry dear. I hate to tell you- except I dont." I say chuckling.
She narrows her eyes at me. "I am going kill you, next time you even think about doing that- no I am going to tickle you." She walks backwards, her eyebrows furrowed as we continue on the rocky path. My grin never falters despite her yelling, insisting that she was going to tickle me to death. I listen, nodding nonchalantly as as watch the destination grow as we near. She was still talking when we arrive.
"Hey, shut up. We are here." I tell her placing my hands on her shoulders to turn her around to the veiw. We were standing at the start of a waterfall. The river we had been following, it fell into a large waterfall, pooling into a huge lake. We could see the forest spread out before us, small paths weaving throughout it. The trees all seemed to be a different shade of green, pulling together to make this wide expanse that we see. I look over at her, suprise and awe clear on her face. She seems to say something though I cant hear her over the rushing of water. I shake my head.
"What now?" She was yelling, though that fact wasn't anything new. I shed the backpack I was carrying for her. The grin on my face spilling all my plans. "Oh no. No. Nope. You are not jumping off this one Otto, period. No puppy dog eyes are going to change that." She says loudly over the sound of the waterfall.
I shake my head, taking of my shirt and jeans. "Okay then. Try to stop me." I tell her walking over to the railing. I hop over it easily.
Some more cursing in another language followed. I watched as she took off her shirt, I couldn't help but grin in victory. "I hate you so much Otto, I cant even- good lord help us now that's a long way down." She says peering over the egde from the rail. I roll my eyes.
I hold my hand out my hand for her to take. "Amber, it just seems to be getting easier and easier to convince you to jump off cliffs with me." She glares at me, holding onto the railing tightly. "It will go by quicker than you think. It's not that tall, it just seems like it." I tell her with a reassuring smile. She takes my hand after climbing over the rail. "Okay so you need to jump as far out as you can. Do you understand me sunflower?" She nods, fear blanketed her face as she glanced over the egde, it was more than a few steps away, but it seemed to loom over us. "Okay then. On three okay?" I ask, she nods again. Her eyes still on the egde. I use my free hand to guide her face to look at me. "Its gonna be okay." I say simply. I give her a small kiss, dropping my hand with a nod, and returning my gaze to the cliff. "One."
She glances over to me, a nervous smile on her face. "Two." She says, still loud, but her voice shook.
I take a deep breath. "Three." We both rush forward. I push off the egde, and it was like my organs fell before my body did. I refused to close my eyes as time distorts and slows, the cold air pushing against me quickly. The waterfall beside me is the only sound I could hear. Her hand fell out of mine as the dark water approached me. My heart beats quicker and quicker as we both fall faster. My arms seemed to have a mind of their own, flailing around as if I was a baby bird trying to fly. I look around for Amber, seeing her hair flying behind her, tangled and moving with the air. I was yelling, I didn't notice it before now. But I was screaming, even with the silly grin on my face. And so was Amber, though I had a feeling that she was not smiling. Gravity finally yanked me down, into the depths of the cold lake.
The air seemed to suffocate me before the water did, I fell in with a large splash. Trying my best to retain the air that I got as I sink further into the lake. Adrenaline seemed to be all I felt as I hit the bottom of the lake harder than I should have. Questions flew through my mind as I pushed off the floor of the lake. It seemed to take longer to get to the surface than it did sink. By the time my hand reached out of the freezing water my lungs burned and ached for oxygen. I look around for Amber, who was already swimming towards the shore. I take a deep breath, a wide smile on my face as I float on my back. Simply allowing the water to take me where it needed me most.
✁・・・
I wake up slightly groggy, reaching out slowly to hold Amber. Though I find no one. I was entirely awake now. I run a hand through my hair, a slight panic running through me. I jump out of the warm bed. Walking quietly and quickly to the door, I crack it, glancing out. I knew something had to be wrong, Amber never woke up early. I had to do a double take though. She was dancing. A soft upbeat soft drifted through our livingroom.
She danced and swayed to the beat, her long brown hair following her every movement. I watch her silently as she weaves around the furniture, her eyes closed and a gentle smile on her face. I couldn't help but replicate the smile, her hands traveling throughout the air elegantly. Gorgeous. She wore my sweatpants and a black bra, a sheer black top thrown over it. Her movements were smooth like water, ing through the air perfectly. I watched as she danced, her smile unwavering. Happiness radiated off of her. Her long limbs flowed with the rhythm, creating a simple masterpiece. The smile on her face filled me with joy. The song ended and another began.
Her movements changed, becoming slightly more sharp with the song. The song moved loudly through the room. I wondered how long she had been dancing. I move into the living room, the smile never leaving my face. Her eyes flutter open, her smile growing at the sight of me. "I'm sorry if I woke you babe." She said, her voice barely above a whisper. I envelop her in a warm hug, all the panic from before gone with her loving arms around me.
I shake my head as we sway with the song. "Not at all, I just didn't think you would be up this early." It was about six o'clock in the morning and usually I had to tell her to get out of bed at around eight, and at nine I had to drag her out.
She lays her head on my shoulder. "Yeah, I wasn't able to sleep last night so I have just been doing random things." She says softly.
"Do you want to talk about what kept you up?" The question placing a small weight on my shoulders, nervousness pacing in my stomach.
"No. I dont, it's nothing. I'm fine, thanks though." Her answer didn't ease my concern, but it did push them to the back of my mind.
I nod. "Okay but still, you are a beautiful dancer Amber." I tell her, smiling softly, her warmth comforting me.
"It would be even more beautiful if I had someone to dance with." She says pointedly, a chuckle escaping her.
I laugh. "As if. This is the most I dance, I call it the Otto Sway." I tell her, somewhat serious about it. I didn't say another word about the question, not wanting to push her on the matter. We all had our mysteries.
She gives me a little peck on the cheek. "Okay okay, well let's go get ready for the day." She says softly.
"Do we have to?" I ask, not wanting to leave this moment for a long time.
"I'm afraid so babe." She says, detaching from me and walking away to the kitchen, turning off the music as she goes. Though I couldn't shake the bad feeling that had settled inside me.
