As David traveled, he found it harder to keep moving, fatigue settling over his body. Just a little more, then I can stop for the day. You never know what could be a few paces away. He thought to himself as he pulled the strings of his heavy pack tighter. As if on cue, the teen noticed something peeking through the thick of the trees further ahead. It seemed to be the tip of a roof.
David, growing hopeful, plodded through the snow faster and with more enthusiasm, practically feeling the consoling warmth of the fireplace already. As he neared the clearing, he could make out more and more of the structure ahead of him. It was a tall, worn down mansion, covered in moss, vines, and glistening, frost covered spiderwebs. He his hope began to dwindle as he looked over the house, seeing cracked windows and boards over the windows. The characteristics made it seem abandoned.
Until a shimmering light caught his eye beneath one of the boards. A single candle was lit in the window of one of the rooms on the highest floor. Someone must’ve been there to light it if it still sat, flickering. Suddenly, all of David’s lost hope had returned to him, filing his chest with a warm relieved emotion as he approached the large doors of the building.
He hovered his hand over the cool metal door knocker for a moment, pondering if this idea was the greatest he had in mind. He didn’t know the intentions of the person or persons behind this door. For all he knew, this tall piece of metal and wood could be all that stands between him and a criminal, or a child napper, or worse! He then shivered, the cold pricking his nose and released the door knocker, deciding to take the chance, but prepare himself with his pocket dagger just in case the inhabitants of this house weren’t as friendly as he had hoped.
After a few moments of waiting and getting no reply, he wondered if the owner had heard him. So he knocked a second time, starting to believe the house truly was abandoned. At that moment, David noticed the door creek open just a tad. It was unlocked all along. It really must be abandoned. David concluded, hesitation a moment more before pocketing his dagger, opening the door further, and stepping inside, then closing it behind him.

The inside of the broken down mansion was as expected. Scattered furniture littered the entrance hall and ballroom, along with stray vines and more spiderwebs. Dust filled the air, and filtered through the boy’s lungs with every breath, making him cough every now and then.
The interior of the tall home was humongous. The entrance led into a large gathering room, following straight ahead to a grand staircase leading into two separate platforms and most likely to the sleeping quarters and study of the house. To the direct right was the doorway leading to the large, yet bare kitchen, then opening up into a large dining hall with a long, wooden, burgundy table planted in the middle and chairs complementing the sides of it. A stained glass window accompanied the wall at the end of the room, letting in the little light from outside that was left in the day. To the left of the entrance, rested a simple yet large billiard room with a humble fireplace at the end of it. Cigar packets and ash trays litter the floor from where Davd could see, as well as broken wine glasses. The sick smell of tobacco still seeped ever so subtly from the room from the trashed smoke sticks and chew strewn about. David scrunched his nose up at the nauseating scent and averted his gaze, focusing back on the stairs ahead.
After observing the mansion from where he stood, he took a few more cautious steps into the towering building. Then, the young man felt a small tug at the rim of his pants. His gaze fell upon a small, gray mouse, who met his eyes and let out a small peep.
“Oh hello there, little guy!” He said squatting down to greet the small mammal, who nuzzled into his hand when he went to stroke it.
“Is this your home? Sorry for intruding. I have nowhere to stay.” He explained to the tiny creature. In response, the rodent said nothing, of course, for it was a mouse. But instead gave a small pull on his sleeve and scampered off.
“Hey wait!” David called to his little friend, who in response, stopped on the stairs and turned around once more to meet his gaze, chittering and wiggling it’s wet little nose.
Does it want me to follow it? David wondered standing up on his feet again. He hesitated another moment, looking back to the door and shuddering, thinking about the nipping cold outside. He didn’t want to keep walking in the bone chilling weather he was sure to face if he retreated the building, but also wasn’t sure if the choice of pressing onward into a mysterious mansion in the woods was the best course of action. Pondering it a few moments longer, David came to the conclusion that, though this wasn’t the best course of action, it was the better and most comfortable of the two presented to him at that moment. So with that thought in mind, he took a breath, pulled the strings of his pack tighter, and followed the mouse deeper into the enigmatic manor.
