Before we begin, we need to answer the question, “What is manhwa?” A quick answer to this question is: manhwa are South Korean comics.

The word linguistically has the same root as manga (which you probably know, Japanese comics), or manhua, the word used for Chinese comics. Basically, the word means "instant drawings" in all three languages, but its usage has evolved to include comics of any origin.

From our perspective as outsiders, the word you use refers to the country of origin, so “manhwa” is only used to talk about comics that come from South Korea.

Just as the words have similar origins, the history of manhwa began in a similar way to the history of manga. Now that we’ve gotten the short answer on what manhwa is, it’s time to move on to the longer answer.

The earliest examples of sequential art date back to the 18th century, with the first examples of satirical artwork, such as Oyewoldo. However, the first comics as understood in the West date back to the early 20th century with the first political cartoon published in the newspaper Daehanminbo on June 2, 1909. The author of the first single- cartoon was Lee Doo-young, under the pen name Gwanjae. The newspaper continued to publish satirical works until its forced closure on August 31, 1910. Over the next decade, comics continued to develop in newspapers, with four-frame drawings being carried out, albeit under heavy censorship.

In the early 2000s, manhwa were heavily influenced by the more popular Japanese manga, both in their art style and in their storytelling. They were black and white, and were published in magazines such as Comic Champ by Daewon C.I., which launched in the mid-1990s. This magazine featured many stories, and successful stories were then collected into volumes, as is customary in Japan when manga chapters are collected into tankōbon.

At the same time, the first online comic services began to develop in South Korea, and the vertical format began to appear step by step. This was the opposite of the traditional horizontal format of many short works.

It was during this era that manhwa began to gain some attention in the West.

An early example is the King of Hell series (2001–2016) published in the US by Tokyopop. There was also the Blade of the Phantom Master series (2001–2007), published in Japan as Shin Angyo Onshi. This series was successful enough to receive an anime film in 2004, produced by OLM and Character Plan, making it one of the first manhwa to receive an anime film. Around the same time, the first webtoons began to appear online, with artists posting their work on their own websites. Creators such as Kang Full, Snowcat, and Marine Blues emerged during this early webtoon era. In 2004, the Daum Comics World platform launched, publishing Love Story by Kang Full, the first long-running webtoon series, which became an instant hit. Just a year later, the Naver Webtoon platform also launched, and the webtoon era officially began.

Manhwa's entry into anime

Between 2014 and 2018, webtoons gave themselves over to the world. Some platforms even allowed them to read the information before requesting small payments to access the latest chapters. In 2015, the trend of novels turning into webtoons began with Moonlight Sculptor and Daughter of the Emperor, but the best was yet to come. In 2018, a web novel titled Solo Leveling was turned into a webtoon.
