What is the difference between Invisibility Cloaks and Vanishment?

An invisibility cloak is a magical garment which renders whomever or whatever it covers invisible. Invisibility cloaks are exceptionally rare and valuable within the wizarding world.

Invisibility cloaks may be woven from the hair of a Demiguise. They can also be produced by enchanting an ordinary travelling cloak with an exceptionally strong Disillusionment Charm or Bedazzling Hex.

Unfortunately, most invisibility cloaks wear out over time, eventually becoming visible. They are also vulnerable to damage from spells. The only expection of these rules is the Cloak of Invisibility that is a Deathly Hallow.

Vanishment is the art of causing things to disappear. Vanished objects do not simply cease to exist. Instead they go into non-being, into

everything. This means that the arrangement of atoms is being altered. The distance between the atoms expands to the point where the object loses its essential properties and disappears. This causes the objects to be everywhere and nowhere.

Objects can be vanished by using vanishing spells, a vanishing cabinet or the Hogwarts Room of Requirement. The most common way to vanish objects is to use vanishment spells. 'Evanesco' is a very common vanishing spell and it is used to vanish both animate and inanimate objects.

The Invisibility Cloaks causes objects to stay where they are while being hidden, whilst Vanishment spells cause objects to actually disappear.

Therefore, the difference between an invisibility cloak and vanishment is that a vanished object is no longer there once vanished, it disappears completely. An object under an invisibility cloak however is still there, it is just not visible to the naked eye.

For example one would be able to bump into someone or something that is under an invisibility cloak since the object is still there, just invisible. However, one would not be able to bump into an object that has been vanished since that object is no longer there.
