ᕼEᒪᒪO ᗩᑎᗪ Oᖇ ᗯEᒪᑕOᗰE!

Today is our beloved or well disliked potions master's birthday. 09/01/1960. Whether you love to hate, hate to love or love to love, Severus Snape is a character that will forever hold a significant part of the Harry Potter story. I wanted to pay tribute to his birthday and decided to test out my new markers that I received for Christmas. So please, scroll ahead to see the progression of some traditional drawing and enjoy!

I began with a simple sketch. This sketch is more like a doodle in the sense that it doesn't have many details, the forms aren't well structured and it looks quite messy. That's okay though! I'm just lying my foundations here, how I want the characters positioned, what the background might look like. I'm getting a sense of composition, which is very important before I start making anything look nice.

I also use lots of references. One for the doe's head and another for the body. I used two different references for Snape's hands. One from a conductor and another from a farmer. Using multiple references helps to keep the anatomy as realistic as possible. I then looked at multiple Snape references to get an idea of how his cloak would fall. Now that I had established some sort of idea, it was time to clean everything up.

I used a kneadable eraser to lightly take off the pencil so I could see better and make cleaner lines. This is what I would call a sketch. It's easier to see, there are more details, the forms and shapes are coming together, but it is still messy. It's rough and loose as it should be, this sketch simply helps me see what I want to do next, which, is probably my least favourite part.

Lineart! Golly gosh. Some people have it, some don't, and I reckon I am one of those people. Lineart is always tricky for me because I like working messy and so I struggle to feel the same amount of triumph that I get when I look at my sketches. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this lineart. It's a little shaky in some areas but I think it adds to the original drawing. I also used a blue and green pencil to line the doe and the background. This brought a softer tone to the drawing and I think it contrasted nicely with Snape as the harsh figure.

It was then time to colour. These markers are alcohol based so they don't sink into the paper like other markers. Instead, they sit on top of the paper until it dries, which allows you time to blend and layer colours. I am not the most skilled with these and I'm definitely still learning, but one of the best ways to learn is to try something new on something you like. If you don't like it, you can improve it next time and if you do, you'll be encouraged to keep going.

I started with a base layer of simple colours and I mostly worked from dark to light. I would put in the darkest colours and shadows first then work my way to the lighter tones, blending everything together. This is a very similar technique to painting and is often called blocking.

The most difficult part was creating a glowing effect around the doe. I used a lot of layering and added pencil on top to try and blend the colours a bit better. Part of me wanted to leave the drawing as just the two figures, but I usually do this to avoid the challenge of drawing in backgrounds. I really wanted to try new things all at once and so I didn't shy away from making a background and persisted.

And here we are. The final drawing. I'm quite happy with the result. I like the cool colours that I used as it really makes the piece feel serene and in the middle of nowhere. I really like the initial drawing but I wish it stood out a bit more. I think because I struggled with the glowing effect, I lost parts of the drawing. I think this could possibly look better as a digital drawing which is something I definitely want to try in future.

I'm quite pleased with this tribute piece and I hope you enjoy viewing the final product! The character of Severus Snape is a personal favourite of mine and has been since I was introduced to the Harry Potter world, so it would only make sense for me to do a little something for his birthday.
