challenge! i thought this idea was

really interesting and the prompt

inspired me to share one of my

(debatable/controversial) opinions

about one of my favorite harry

potter characters. without further

𝐖𝐇𝐘 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐌𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐄?

the person I believe needs fixing is none other than hermione granger. you may be thinking to yourself, “what? hermione? no, she’s amazing! she’s a member of the golden trio, she’s the brightest witch of her age, she’s the person i relate to most because i have gifted kid syndrome!” well, i hate to break it to you, but hermione isn’t the best role model, and it’s because of her treatment of other women throughout the series.

many people consider hermione a “feminist icon”, but that is usually referring to the emma watson portrayal of hermione, not the book version. and she does have some feminist qualities- refusing to back down when challenged, having a primarily-male friend group, and an advocate for equality (as seen in her creation of SPEW). despite these, hermione is also seen to be cold, aloof, and even rude to female companions and classmates. along with this, she insults most of the girls in the series at least once. some of these moments include:

- hermione continuously insulting fleur (though, honestly, mrs. weasley was the worst with this)

- feeling no remorse for disfiguring the face of marietta, even though she betrayed the army in order to protect her mother

- hermione calls luna “loony” (in the movie)

-calling firenze a horse (despite her stress of creature equality) because pavarti and lavender find him attractive

- showing distain for lavender numerous times throughout the book, including setting canaries on ron just for kissing her

and a much stronger hatred to female characters than male ones (she literally kidnaps rita skeeter for a whole week but is fawn-eyed over gilderoy lockhart?? girl look at the red flags). she is someone that many people, especially young girls, look up to, so it’s important for her to reverse this behavior.

𝐅𝐈𝐗𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐌𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐄

luckily, I believe this issue can be easily solved, given hermione’s views on equality in other areas of her life. I have diagnosed her problem as not like other girls syndrome. being “not like other girls” is a sexist stereotype often portrayed in literature and media. it is defined by a woman seeing herself as better than others by acting uncharacteristically unfeminine, and along with it, judging those who do like girly or “basic” things. if hermione identifies herself as this, it makes sense as to why she acts so negatively towards hyper-feminine characters such as lavender and pavarti. and, with that, all of her hatred towards women is mostly because of her crush on ron. overall, this means that hermione believes that since she is an academic, and “not like other girls”, she should be perceived as more desirable towards others.

there are a variety of ways to adjust her thinking into one that is more feministic, but the way that hermione would understand best is through a lesson. hermione is very academic, and so forcing her to learn about the subject through seminar or lecture would be beneficial to her. alongside this lesson, i’d assign her a reading on this subject. there is a wonderful blog called the thought catalog that talks about this subject in a simple, insightful way, and it is written in a way in which hermione could recognize the signs in herself and learn to correct the behavior (if you’d like to, you can read it here). finally, just to ensure she grasps the concept, she would be assigned an 12-inch parchment essay in which she must explain the trope and why it is wrong to perpetuate the idea of being “not like other girls”. if this succeeds, hermione would then be able to recognize when she is demonstrating sexist behavior and be able to create deeper, more honest friendships with her female companions and associates.
