Why Tale of Hopped pot is flawed

By Prasanna :sparkles:

At first glance, the story of The Wizard and the Hopping Pot*l appears to be another tale with a moral on kindness and helping others. However, instead of personal growth, the story relies on trickery. The young wizard does not learn the importance of being generous through empathy or self-reflection. He is instead burdened by the pot’s persistent harassment (Your son is not your pot's house elf bro !!) that he eventually complies with. This raises the question of whether the actions he takes at the end of the story are on his own or if they are simply, him trying to relieve himself from his suffering.

External pressure should never dictate morality, true morality should come from an understanding internally. (Quote by me, now)

There are foundational issues with this thing. It does not modify the character arc or ideology of the son in any way. His father was always kind by choice and reasoned for his actions and in his case, it is more meaningful. On the other hand, the son does not display kindness and empathy or appreciation for altruism, he simply aims to stop the pot from tormenting him. Once the pot has been removed, there’s no evidence to show that the son will continue helpful behavior. If kindness is to have any meaning, it must be performed after empathy and comion is displayed rather than forced.

Another problem is that the story assumes that the only aim of good behavior is to do good and does not consider the purpose behind it. Is someone who helps others just to avoid punishment or for their own discomfort truly good ? Like, is it okay if I kill hundreds of wizards and witches to just save Harry Potter ?? (Oh wait nvm.. JK Rowling - 1, Me - 0 :( oops ).

Rather, ethical actions need to be made from our conscience instead of persuasion. The hopping pot, in essence, acts as a magical form of blackmail whereby the son does not have the freedom to choose whether to comply or not. This is similar to behavioral conditioning rather than moral education.

To sum up, The Wizard and the Hopping Pot advocates a basic (like you) understanding of morality, one where goodness is forced, not earned. In their place, the lesson more effectively taught would be one where the son learns the spirit of kindness over time, through conversation, storytelling or merely watching the effects of his selfishness. But instead, true moral change happens from within a person, not outside.
