— what is astronomy?

• the general field of natural science concerned with celestial objects including solar systems, galactic, and extragalactic objects.

— astronomy utensils

• telescope:     a good telescope with the right use is a powerful tool to take a look at the celestial bodies in our night sky that are too far away too be seen by the bare eye

• star chart:      a powerful tool helping to

understand the constellations of our stars even during daylight

• model:      models of planets and systems give us a feeling of in what relations our planets stay to each other

— celestial bodies

• what are stars:      stars are huge celestial bodies made mostly of hydrogen and helium that produce light and heat from the churning nuclear forges inside their cores. aside from our sun, the dots of light we see in the sky are all light-years from earth. they are the building blocks of galaxies, of which there are billions in the

universe

• what are planets:      a planet is a celestial body that 1. is in orbit around the sun, 2. has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium nearly round shape, and 2. has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit

• what are dwarf planets:      a "dwarf planet" is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, (c) has not cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit, and (d) is not a satellite.

• what is a galaxy:      a galaxy is a huge collection of gas, dust, and billions of stars and their solar systems, held together by gravity. our galaxy, the milky way, also has a supermassive black hole in the middle. there are many galaxies in the depths of space still, in fact more than our greatest witches and wizards could count yet.
