Tell me about your first times with a hamster

I feel like very anxious since I got Chocolat, which tbf it was my brother fault for impulsively bringing her home.

And I thought, how fellow hamster owners felt when they got their first hamster?

What troubles and worries the new pet brought?

I honestly am always scared about her well being, I see and hear about loss of hamsters in such ways that I'm now anxious, lowkey scared and always try to check on her, was it like that for everyone?

How did you move on from the first loss? Were you always scared to find them gone one day?

I'm trying to relate to someone, I feel like I'm overthinking and overreacting about every little thing-

I spent two years trying to convince my parents to let me get a hamster. Up untill then I've only owned cats and dogs but they were never allowed in the house. I really wanted an indoor pet so I started studying about hedgehogs, guineea pigs, and rabits until I got to hamsters. Hamsters seemed like the easiest to take care of since they were so small (note: please do not take this as an advice, I was around twelve back then and didn't know much about hamster care ^^") so I asked for a hamster. My mom instantly said no (she said they look like rats :sob: ) but finally after two years of trying to persuade her, she finally agreed. It's pretty ironic looking back now since she's super invested in my hamster to the point where she ed a bunch of facebook groups about hamsters. Not only that, but she's finally learning about hamster behavior and proper care. When we first got Heichou, my mom didn't want me to get anything larger than a 200 square inch bin but soon we upgraded to a 1,050 square inch enclosure (which she's really proud of :) ) Fast forward to present time, we just adopted a syrian who urgently needed a rehome. Despite her introverted behavior, we all love her and I can't wait to start bonding with her ♡

honestly, mine was an impulse buy so i spent the first week crying myself to sleep wishing i hadn’t bought her cuz she wouldn’t stop chewing the bars and it made the worst noice possible.

then i learnt she needed a larger cage and did my research and then i started to fricking love hamsters to death

my previous hamster, i sort of could’ve guessed she was about to die. One day i left for school and she was awake (nothing usually) but when i came home from school she was still awake ( very unusual), then she stayed up without disappearing till 11pm and then i didn’t hear her for 2 nights straight only to discover her dead under her sand bath (went to clean the sand bath so i grabbed it and she was under it and i first thought she was sleeping but then i smelt it and she wasn’t responding so rip (there was bedding under the sand bath ofc, the sand bath was literally a random lid from a container lol))

so i guess you’ll notice the hamster’s activity/habits change before they

Sometimes I wish my brother didn't got her impulsively and gave me some heads up, now I'm always dreading because I couldn't prepare myself mentally

She's doing fine tho. She is currently using her wheel, eating and drinking so I feel less anxious

it’s honestly normal to worry when getting a new hamster, not only for new owners but also for people who have had hamsters for forever

usually they’re fine, as long as they’re active, eating and drinking , yiu shouldn’t be worrying :) <3

Thank you <3 I think the hardest part was that I wasn't expecting it and I hadn't actually interacted with her properly for like a week beforehand, she was 1 year and 8 months ☹
