Oxbow has a new survey, like the one they did regarding the backlash after unveiling their horrific cage. This time they're asking for your thoughts on their hamster/gerbil pellets: Survey :)
Incase anyone needs a refresher, either* of oxbows pellets are completely unsuitable. The fat/protein percentages are not within recommended parameters, it's made almost entirely of hay, and of course lacks any variety.
It will fill their bellies and isn't necessarily unsafe, but they cannot last on it. Unlike rabbits and guinea pigs, hamsters and gerbils thrive on carbs like seeds/grains and not grasses/veggies. Oxbow did not research this and assumed that these species had the same nutritional needs, which has resulted in common cases of hamsters failing to thrive and sometimes worse.
The only redeeming factor could be the high fiber, but it's not so helpful seeing as most hamsters despise Oxbow pellets
* Apparently Oxbow does have a new ham/gerbil food that just barely meets the parameters, but the second ingredient is hay and it's still a pellet so,, hardly better and still not usable.
