My brother came back with a hamster yesterday, we told him not to but he didn't want to listen so now I'm stuck with the responsibility, because I know he won't take the proper care needed.

I think is a dwarf due to the small size, 1 years ish? and a female, but unsure, I don't wanna hold them and stress them.

I'm deadass anxious because I want to give the kiddo a proper life, and I did a lot of researches.

Right now we keeping the pet on a bin that is smaller than needed. I rehoused them temporarily due to the previous cage being a literal cylinder of 15x15cm or less and height unknown.

I gave them a 35x42xh25cm, I know is small but till I don't get my room back (family reasons) I can't give it a bigger one :(

I tried to convince mom for a bigger one but we really can't until the family reason is present; rehoming them seems very stressful, after being transported from one house to another in a small cylinder and getting a new cage, I don't want to put them in a more stressful situation.

I also made a mistake, and got fir wood bedding, would that be bad?? How long can I keep it before I can get a new proper one? Should I mix the fir one with the new one so the their smell stick to not stress them further more? Or should I just scrap the fir one totally and rub some napkins then shred it so their scent are in the new bedding?

I don't want to change the bedding right away as it might be too stressful for them, but I saw that fir isn't the best idea :(

I don't have a wheel yet, I got them a wooden tunnel and the toilet tube thingy. They gave my brother (for free) the hamster with no proper cage, no toy at all, only a cup of food???

My brother said they always kept the hamster in that cage??

I'm too anxious about doing a bad job, I'm trying my best and want to give this kiddo a more fun and happy life.

Currently they let me pet them and handfeed them, they also can now bury, but I don't think they're totally into the cage, unsure whether because is a new environment or cuz they're bored, I'll try to give some space for a wheel soon.

Wish me luck, I'm committed in taking care of them and I hope I can get the proper resources soon </33

I don't wanna put any pictures because I'm ashamed of the situation rn :(((

well first of all, hamsters ALWAYS need a wheel, unless you have a MASSIVE cage, but usually still a wheel is always necessary, so until you have that your hamster will be bored regardless of what you give them, as hamsters have an urge to run a lot, as they would also do so in the wild and with a small cage that cannot be properly proved.

if you wish you can dm me and we can try and figure out what may be best with what you can provide them with currently. I’ve had my share of bad hamster care in the beginning, trust me, i won’t judge, i kept my first hamster in the same sized cage for like 4 months before finally convincing my mother for an upgrade

unless by massive you mean like a couple of miles squared, then a wheel is necessary.
