What type of bedding should you use for a travel cage? Generally, a towel or pee pad is easy to clean, safe and comfortable for the cavies, but of course this is for a short period of time.

to never use bedding that can harm a guinea pig, as seen in my Bedding wiki.

I prefer putting a pee pad or two, then a towel on top. I also put a towel on top of the carrier in case it is cold or raining.

Travel cage types

Never use a travel cage that has a wire bottom, because this can injure pig paws or get paws stuck. Also, who would want to have fevers and urine fall between the wiring?

I recommend using a small dog carrier.

Don’t use those flexible carriers that guinea pigs can be thrown around in or ruin the soft sides of.

Sometimes you can also use the small, cramped petstore cages for a carrier.

What else to add, and what not to add

Food

Guinea pigs should have a little bit of hay, rarely pellets, and sometimes veggies and fruits with them in their carrier.

Water

Always have a water bottle on hand when traveling with a guinea pig or taking them to the vet.

Toys, treats and salt licks

You should not add these. They give the cavy less space to move around.

A friend

When you’re visiting the vet, it’s best to bring along the other cavy. They won’t be worried about each other and it’ll help with stress.
