Intro

Should you buy a Guinea Pig or Adopt? When I got my guinea pigs I sadly bought them. There are many reasons as to why adopting any animal is the best choice.

Pet Mills

When buying animals from pet stores they often come from pet mills. Although people might say, “well I’m saving this animal.” Your saving one animal and in return 10 more get breaded into terrible living conditions. I will not add a picture because it could be sensitive material to some people, but you can look up Guinea Pig mills.

Price

Buying a Guinea Pig from pet stores usually are around $50. When adopting some can go from name your own fee to $75. Usually the former.

Best Care

When buying from pet stores they usually hold them in conditions that are too small. When adopting they tend to have the required amount of space for the Guinea Pig. For example, at The Las Angelos Guinea Pig Rescue, they have the perfect size cage for guinea pigs.

No Surprises

When buying a guinea pig you could accidentally get a boy and a girl that aren’t spayed or neutered. Maybe even a pregnant female guinea pig. When adopting the rescue won’t send you home with a boy and a girl thinking you have the same sex. The rescue also will not send you home with a pregnant guinea pig. If a female guinea pig comes into the rescue and is not spayed they will make sure that the guinea pig is not around a unneutered male guinea pig. Sometime a in pet stores you could be getting a not neutered boy and not spayed girl or a pregnant girl.

Bonded Pairs

Most rescues already have pairs that are bonded, so you won’t have to go through the stress of bonding them. Sometimes pet stores have bonded guinea pigs, but most likely they are not fully bonded.

Experts

The Guinea pig rescue will not send you home with a sick guinea pig or even a guinea pig that is possible sick. With pet stores they don’t care if the guinea pig is sick or not they just want to make money.

Outro

Personally I feel you should adopt for all the reasons listed above. Please don’t make the mistake I did and buy from a pet store.

I did adopt my first two from a friend that couldn't keep them anymore. Sadly when one ed on, I searched and searched for any guinea pigs near me for adoption, but couldn't find any, so I did buy one. I wouldn't have, but I wanted to get Dakota and friend right away.
