Retired Atlantic Hurricane Names: Part 1 (The Oldies (1954-1964)

The practice of naming storms goes way back to the early 16th century, where in Puerto Rico, they would name it after a saint based on when its feast day was. But in 1950, the US decided to experiment with using the phonetic alphabet. In 1953, the US Weather Bureau Office in Miami, now known as the National Hurricane Center, drew up a list of all female names of which would be used. In 1954, 3 storms were so destructive that it was deemed insensitive to use them again. Therefore, Carol, Edna, and Hazel were the first 3 that are now known as the first "retirements"
