What is light pollution?

Light pollution is pollution emitted from electronic or artificial lights. It is caused by buildings, vehicles, lampposts and any other artificial source of light.

What are the effects of light pollution?

Because of light pollution, bats are being thrown off course and can’t find as much to eat. They are also tricked into thinking it is day and don’t come out. Fireflies are attracted to light, and instead of finding a mate, stray towards the artificial light.

Because of light pollution, many stars are hidden from the sky. The Earth is artificially lit up, and now we can’t see as many stars, constellations as other space objects in the sky.

Familiar constellations such as the zodiacs (Leo, Pisces, etc.) have missing stars and we can’t make out the shapes.

It washes out moon, sun and star lights. It also wastes electricity, causing to more having to be produced and eventually other problems, such as global warming or greenhouse gases.

Light pollution tricks animals and humans into thinking it is cat, and affects our health and sleep.

Light pollution causes species such as sea turtles to crawl towards the wrong place and die.

These are only a few effects light pollution has on the world.

What can I do to help?

Though one person can’t make the whole world black out (it is night at different times in different places), you can try using less light and electricity. Go to sleep at a decent time, and don’t go on any devices one hour within bedtime.
