I've always been curious about Metal Mario because it often feels like he's suppose to be an antagonist in the Mario universe since he acts like a direct rival to Mario but why would a Metal version of Mario be a rival to himself? Well I have theory...a MARIO THEORY! Thank you for reading
My theory is is that Metal Mario version of Mario is a Mario from a parallel universe who became power hungry from becoming Metal Mario because as Metal Mario, he's essentially invincible AND he can freely move underwater, something that the original Mario can't do. Further proof that Metal Mario might be a Mario from a parallel universe is the fact that they both have different sayings and laughs.
What makes Metal Mario even more scarier is the fact that since we never see him open his mouth, the parallel universe Mario is essentially trapped in a metal body unable to breathe, that might explain why back in Super Mario 64 that the Metal Cap was limited because if it went any longer, Mario would probably drown.
Also notice this: outside of Super Mario 64, Metal Mario has never appeared in the main series, only in spinoffs. Think of it, an enemy that is a rival to Mario but much more dangerous than Bowser because unlike Bowser, Metal Mario is invincible, might explain why he never appears in the main series. The power of a character are much different in spinoffs and main series like Bowser who is a huge threat in the mains series, but is also a friendly rival in spinoffs. If Metal Mario ever appeared in the main series, his threat to Mario would most likely be much more stronger than Bowsers because Mario will then have to face a new enemy, and that enemy might be...himself.
