Just so there's no misunderstanding from the title or anything: I don't really hate or dislike any of these names. I'm also not saying that one version is particularly better than the other. This is just a fun poll to see which changes are considered the most unnecessary, because they changed barely anything, the original was better, or other reasons.

Ted Woolsey did the original English translation for FFVI, as well as games like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire, and more.

Oh...
Gilbart --> Edward
My theory is that the translators changed the name to avoid bard puns, but I agree that it's not really necessary

It just annoys me because Edward is Edge's name. The translators could've chosen any other name, but they just had to give Gilbart a name that another party member already has.

I honestly never understood the change to the name Edward. And I feel like it also affected newcomer's impression of Edge's character. I lending a friend my DS edition of IV and while she read the booklet she couldn't stop making fun of how Edge's name also fit his (in her eyes) edgy design. So I can also say from personal experience that this change was more than likely for the worst.
