In the year 1947 Christian Dior brought us his "Ligne Corolle" or what Harper's Bazaar would call the "New Look". This very special look consisted of a small waist, small shoulders and a wide skirt. Usually a Pettycoat would be worn under the skirt, giving the woman a feminine figure.

"It's quite a revolution, dear Christian! Your dresses have such a new look!"

-Carmel Snow, Harper's Bazaar

But small waists and big skirts have been a thing all throughout history so what made Dior's New Look so revolutionary? It was the time in history where he decided to to this. During World War 2, the focus on fashion went away quite quickly. The people were poor and even Paris lost it's fashion glory. While the men were at war, women often times had to work jobs which used to be deemed as masculine work for example in factorys and production. This meant most of the clothes worn were cheap, recycled and had to be useful and comfortable for work. Years prior, in the 20s dresses weren't very tight, you could dance and move and it was much less restricted than clothes used to be.

So when war was over and people were still poor, it came as a shock when Dior released this new line where he used up a lot of time an resources like fabric and the dresses were overly feminine and more restricted again.

Dior was a revolutionary couturier, one of the best of his time and many people would be inspired by his work. Even today the house Dior still draws inspiration from his designs over 60 years later. New Look brought Paris back to it's glory fashion wise.

And many people will say that it was a step back for the empowerment of women. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't that's hard to tell. But saying this would mean feminine women can't be strong and Independent which is absolutely wrong. What I think the New Look may have done, is remind the people of how it was before the war. It was scandalous and refreshing. But I cannot judge the situation back then because I didn't live back then.

What I like about it is what it did for the Fashion Industry. If it wasn't for this, Paris may have never been the city of fashion again. Maybe Dior would have never been this popular, which could have cost us amazing designers like Yves Saint Laurent.

But my favourite part is still how absolutely beautiful this style looks. I'm glad this period of time in fashion history existed.

#InMyOpinion New Look is absolutely gorgeous.
