Dear My Dear | My First Experience With Oil Paints

Hello everyone! It’s been quite a while that i’ve posted any of my art that wasn’t for the Artlings, but i’m proud to say that i finally have some things to show to you all that i have been working on for months.

in october (i’ll correct this if i’m wrong, i don’t currently have the work on hand) my new art teacher plagued me with the idea of creating a triptych for my drawing/painting class. we were to be working in this triptych all semester for our final (showing it off at our local art gallery) as she knew painting takes a while. well, she told me that there had to be some sort of meaning added into it or at least try to make it a new style you arent used to and encouraged me to try oil paints for the first time with it. so i said eff it, if i’m gonna try a new style, i might as well try a new medium as well.

so i chose this picture of chen because i still wasn’t over it yet

i originally was going to go for the art style on the cover of Power because i really really like it, but as i kept going, i realized that i wasn’t going in that direction. oil is too new for me, so i ended up going realistic with it as i usually do. i put horns on him, changed up the flowers and called it good. i’ll explain why in a moment

at this point when i get this painting done, in december i believe, i realize i don’t have time to do a third painting. i took too long on the first. ugh the struggle of being too slow lmao. so i start my second, not knowing if i could finish this one in time either. i chose to make this picture.

it started out really rough. the scale i was trying to draw it at didn’t really work very well, and i wasn’t completely able to draw his face in there. so i printed off the image and got some help so i could actually start. and i i finished that painting only two days before i needed to lmao

so, as our final was an art show, she made us create artist statements for the people looking our works to understand us as creators and what we’ve made while we aren’t there. this is what i wrote for mine:

The focused works I’m showing today is a diptych called “Dear My Dear”.

The subject is a member from a music group I enjoy a lot and listen to frequently. The two paintings are based on photos he took for his solo album, released early this September; I liked the composition of the pictures.

The medium of these two paintings is oil paint on a cotton canvas and it’s my first time using this medium. The reason I chose these photos, beyond liking their composition, was because I found the relationship between the subject and the flowers appealing.

The subject looks at them somewhat subdued and gazes past the vase in a mournful yet accepting way. So I used the photos, changed the flowers, and added horns to manipulate the pictures into depicting more meaning. I also looked up the symbolic meanings of colors and numbers to add an additional layer of meaning.

I made the subject a demon in a dark room staring at a beautiful vase of flowers, never touching them. I think it creates an atmosphere of loneliness when you see the negative space around him.

The flowers I chose to replace those in the photos were white gardenias and lilies, which symbolize perfection and death. I chose four specifically to symbolize the need for stability and strength. I chose to make his eyes purple/violet to symbolize nostalgia, the future, dreams, and frustration. The lilies are shaded with dark blue to show seriousness, trust, and loyalty. I think these factors put together create a story of love, loneliness, and longing.

the lighting wasn’t as kind to my second piece sjsjsjsj so i took two

in a way i find it weird for me to draw k-pop and have to display that to the public if my town because it feels a bit taboo to like it sometimes sjsjsj but what a power move, amirite? lmao. i’m very happy with the turn out of these pieces and apparently so were the people in my town coming in to look. i was told i could have sold the first one three times and people were wondering why i wasn’t selling it lmao. i felt embarrassed, but i’m glad i created something that even people who don’t know k-pop enjoy

here are my wips for painting one. it started really rough. i asked my teacher how i should go about it and she told me to start in layers. i looked at his cheek ad we both agreed that there was some orange in it SO LAYER ONE GOT SCARY REAL FAST FOR ME. then as i went he looked like someones aunt named karen who just bought new pink lipstick. what a c l o w n. then we began to understand oil and we brought it all back in

new the wips for painting two. this one didn’t have quite a journey as the first. in the beginning there was only a w i d e l o a d . lmao meaning he looked dummy thicc. i was like damn, look at that thick dumpy. the i helped my self and it was pretty much smooth sailing

now as for what my third painting was going to be. it was gonna be this picture here:

i believe it’s the only other one with a vase so i thought it’d look nice with the rest. everything would have been a stronger message had i got it done too. but it is what it is, and tbh, i was probably going to throw another fit if i had to paint those damn frick-ass flowers again lmao
