:hibiscus: patrick’s name was given to him by my trainer when she rescued him from a local ranch in my area. he received this name because he was adopted on st. patrick’s day! his name is one that he responds too but it certainly isn’t my favorite name in the world. we know he’s ed but my trainer doesn’t have his papers because of the situation she got him from.

:hibiscus: bud

to be honest, bud is one of the most generic nicknames for an animal. i feel like “buddy” is a little too long for him, as he’s a rather simple guy. only a few lessoners call him bud, because they think other nicknames suit him better. bud remains my favorite!

🥣 pat

yet again, just a shortened version of his name. nothing too original but he responds to this nickname like his full name!

my trainer calls him this quite often! probably because he is such a gentleman with the younger ones - he’s so good.

🧵cowboy

this nickname has a longer story than the others. patrick is a reining bred quarter horse, and he just looks kind of like a cowboy. i put one of my rope halters on him and i led him into the dusty paddock. he stops, ears up and i say “c’mon cowboy.” it just stuck!

an abnormal color

patrick, if we’re putting this kindly, is a little bit on the heavier side but he certainly isn’t obese. he’s nicely muscled and carries himself slightly uphill, which makes for his gaits all being super smooth. his strides can get short which makes him get rickety, like a really small rocking horse, but once he stretches down and gets round he moves so nicely.

patrick is such an odd color. he’s consider a chestnut because he lacks black points, but he also has a darker mane and tail than his base coat. his hair is super sleek and shiny, besides his ears which are super fuzzy. i absolutely adore his coat! it’s so rich and bright.

his mane and tail are so incredibly silky. they’re one of my favorite features of his, because of how nice they are to braid and such. they have a dark but rich tinge and are super shiny when brushed out. they have a reddish tip. he did rip a good part of his mane out because of the hay hut, but it’s still growing out.

patrick has the cutest little star on his forehead! he doesn’t have any other markings, so his hooves are all gray. he does have front shoes on which make him appear a little taller, but he’s approximately 14 hands. he has a little scratch on his right front leg but it’s healing nicely!

problem child-ish

patrick is lucky enough to have no issues that bother him consistently.

recently, patrick had a terrible outbreak of hives. we had no idea why but we needed to call the vet out so he could get a steroid injection. he also cut his right knee a little bit which required stitches. he’s always had bad front feet (thin soles) so he has front shoes. other than that he’s perfectly healthy!

a causal boss

patrick is often quite calm and playful when he is being handled. he plays his “games” with people and overall his behavior varies from person to person. he likes a select few people, but others are just iffy. he is the lead horse of all the horses.

patrick is phenomenal under saddle with most people. he has his moments and spooks every now and again. he is very forward with me and eager to try new things. he is still learning but he’s got the basics down nicely! over fences he gets a little spunky and “pitches” if you will. his gaits are nice and smooth, and he behaves quite well with the beginners.

patrick doesn’t have any notable fears other than the fact he doesn’t enjoy hula hoops. everyday barn items don’t bother him whatsoever, and he is fine with umbrellas.

tough start

patrick’s story is pretty long. when he was young, he was turned out on a large piece of land in texas with approximately 16 other reining bred quarter horses. he was the lead stallion of their herd for three years. eventually he was rounded up and taken to a rescue in colorado, where he was rehabilitated and started under saddle. my trainer bought him and worked on his training. she never intended to keep him, or make him into a lesson horse, but he remains one for the time being.
