Hey there EA! Welcome back to another post! In today’s post I am going to explain why I like mares more than I like geldings. When reading my post today please keep in mind that this is a personal preference and opinion, and it’s okay to think differently from others. Now, with that said, let’s get started!
Why I Prefer Mares Over Geldings
As someone who owns two mares and one gelding, I can’t help but compare the two genders. By researching and comparing the two, there are certain things about each that I have noticed, and by using those things I have found a preference for one of them: mares. Keep reading to find out why.
While I have nothing against geldings, I have noticed that mares seem to more willing. Studies show that mares tend to think harder than geldings, which makes them get confused more often for sure, but because they think more, it means that they are more willing to please and try their bests to understand what you are telling them to do. With time and proper training, your mare will be the perfect companion.
With the help of some research, I have also figured out that mares value partnership with their riders more than geldings. Partnership is big deal to mares, if you don’t have a good relationship with them, then they won’t want to work with you. While it does make your job as rider a little harder because you have to take the time to build a connection, it makes you feel so proud when you do. Not only are you going to have a connection with your mare, she will now be your friend and partner for life.
One thing that I find super cool about mares, is that they are more in tune to their person’s emotions. If you feel it, they feel it. Let’s say you had a bad day, you got in trouble at school for something that wasn’t your fault and you’ve been crying ever since. When you get home, you go out to your mare’s pasture with tears streaming down your cheeks, and there she is, running up to you with joy. She stays with you until your tears dry, maybe she even runs around, kicking her heels up and tossing her head to make you giggle. It’s all a part of her master plan to make you happy again.
Now the final reason I like mares more than geldings, is because they are overall more active than majority of geldings. Mares have more drive and attitude, which can cause them to fired up and spicy, but are those really bad qualities for a horse to have? A mare knows how to use her attitude and turn it into determination and will, trying her absolute hardest to get that ribbon.
There are a few reasons why I like mares more than geldings! Like I said before, I have nothing against geldings, and I actually plan on making a post on why they are great too! I hope you learned something today, or maybe even you have a different opinion on mares after this! I’ll see you in my next post!
Goodbye!

Does my gelding think he’s a mare then?! He is literally the horse embodiment of a kid that just wants to make everyone proud… and get food
Maybe :eyes:
Mares are amazing!! I can’t decide which I prefer, mares or geldings 🤷🏼♀ they’re both so amazing in their own ways! Mares are cool bc some mares don’t trust very easily, but if you are able to gain their trust they are extremely loyal and sweet. And I love geldings bc they are always so sweet and goofy. So idk. Flicka is one of the best mares I will say :sparkles:
Thank you! Yes, mares and geldings are both awesome in their own ways!
Love this! I also love mares more than geldings, preferably chestnut mares. One of my trainers mares, Delta (in my pfp) will do anything for me. Whenever I go there she tends to be stubborn if someone else is leading her or riding her but with me it’s completely different, she’ll follow me around without a problem. She also loves to get people to fall off her, but she’s only done that to me twice because she got scared of something. I really believe we have a strong bond and everyone at the barn thinks to as well. She also gives me the side eye whenever someone else rides her, the look of why I am letting this person ride her
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing!
