I’ve always wanted to see The Lion King on Broadway, but never got a chance. Hence, I decided to do a cover of one of my favorite songs from the musical, I Just Can’t Wait to be King. I chose to perform it on the Steel Pan because I thought it sounded great on that instrument!

I got the instrumental audio on Youtube Bandlab was used to create this cover. I first put the instrumental in the app, then recorded myself playing the Pan on another track. After, I thought it sounded a bit bland, so I used a new track and recorded some chords and harmony to make the cover more interesting. After, I added reverb to my recorded parts to gain a smoother sounding performance.

I always wanted to learn this song since I saw the Lion King when I was younger. However, it was difficult for me to learn the song because the melody and key were hard to figure out. Now that my aural skills improved, I was able to figure out the melody. Nonetheless, the key was still difficult to deduce. Mainly because the song modulated (changed key) three times. Therefore, I had to change the key of the melody when playing as well. Thankfully, the backing track had clear sounding chords, so I was able to confirm when I was in the right key. Although it was a difficult process, I am still happy I chose to cover this song. In my opinion, I thought it came out better than expected. I am really satisfied with this cover, especially since I performed it on the Steel Pan. I may actually use the Steel Pan for future covers from now on.
