First Time Watching Snow White (Review)

This is my first review, im not going to be very good at this, so sorry in advance. This is my first time watching Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs. I will be rating it based on 5 categories. Plot, Visuals, Music, Characters, and lastly Personal Enjoyment.

Plot

I feel like there wasn't much to the story. Obviously, to others the main plot point was Love, but in my eyes, it was about Jealousy.

Jealousy because the Queen wanted to be "The Fairest of them all" and trying to take out Snow White, that to me was the main plot.

The reason I say there wasn't much is that the middle of the movie was the Dwarfs just gushing over Snow White. I'm sure others had a different perspective on this. I just found it uninteresting.

The ending was annoying to me. First i understand that this is a fictional story and things can happen here that wouldnt in the real world. I totally get that, but Snow White dies from poison. And just awakens from a kiss? Kind of ridiculous. I get it, True Loves Kiss, just kind of eh.

Now I'm not going to just bash the movie, it had a few good moments.

I loved the fact that she was connected with the animals like they were her friends. Even going to warn the dwarfs about the old lady (the queen).

Another moment was when Snow White was guessing the names of the dwarfs, her little, "Ohhhh, you must be Grumpy" in a deeper, sarcastic voice had be chuckling.

Aswell as when Grumpy is trying so hard to be, well grumpy. But clearly enjoyed the kiss from Snow White, while running into things.

Plot - 5/10

Now don't get upset by a 5. It's an average score, I didn't dislike it, just in my eyes not much happened.

Visuals

For a movie made back in 1937 I found the Visuals to be very good. Obviously this was new at the time and I'm sure Disney movies onward would use this as a blueprint but I kind of wished a new movie would have this style of animation. I really love the hand drawn animation of this film.

Obviously it's not perfect, some of the movements aren't fluent at times and at times Snow White has unflattering angles that make her look deformed. Alot of the time the fingers look wonky or Snow White head and neck turn into one thing. But for the first of its kind, I can overlook those discrepancies.

Visuals - 8/10

Wish a newer movie had this style, not all movies but maybe a one off with this old look.

Music

The background music was filled with suspenseful classic masterpieces. But when it wasn't suspenseful I found the music, not bad but just not for me.

As for the musical songs I found them not very good. The vocals weren't bad, definitely of the time. They were just not songs I would find myself singing. It's not Into The Unknown or I'll Make A Man Out Of You, where I'll sing along. This movie didn't have a stand out song, or really any song, I would start singing to, if it came on.

Music - 3/10

Suspenseful sounds were great, other background music and songs were not for me

Characters

Not many characters in this movie. You have seven dwarfs, the evil queen and of course Snow White. Obviously you have the animals and the prince but let's be honest he is just the love interest and nothing more, his only role is to kiss Snow White.

The Seven Dwarfs. I liked they each had a different attribute that defined them but other then that, they were just a bunch of gushing old short men in my eyes. Grumpy had slight personality but overall still wished for more.

The Queen. This was my first time watching so I may have missed something important but to me she was just evil for the sake of being evil? Obviously she wants to be "The Fairest of them all" but is jealous of Snow White and just wants to kill her.

Snow White. I do like her the most, although there isn't much competition. She is the epitome of innocence. Just going on without a care in the world. A teen in love. Wanting love. I do wish she did something? Elsa, Moana, Mulan (I bring these 3 up as I've seen their movies) they made major impact on their movies. And Snow White was simply... a girl?... hard to explain. I just wanted more out of her really.

Characters - 2.5/10

Wanted more out of the few characters the movie had.

Enjoyment

As you can probably tell by now I wanted more out of this movie. Obviously it's a different time. The stories now are more fleshed and thought out more. And I got to this was a first of its kind. I've seen some bad movies. Dropped some bad movies. I didn't drop Snow White so it wasn't horrible. Just lacking in more than a few aspects.

Enjoyment - 4/10

I just slightly disappointed.

OVERALL - 4.5/10

I didn't expect it to be such a low score but this is how the numbers ended up working out. I do think it was carried out by my satisfaction with the hand drawn animation. I can't say anything else completely stood out to me.

This won't deter me from watching more Disney movies as I know how good a Disney movie can truly be. Let me know what I should watch next!
