Thatcher Dane Hayes

Pronounced: Th-at-ch-er, Dane, Hay-es

Named after his grandfather, Thatcher, whom used to be a head Overseer Thatcher’s name is a well recognized one. His father, Dane, had been a lead Overseer and brought the family name great respect and reputation, and now the newest of the line he is expected to do the same. The surname “Hayes” can be traced back many of years to a long line of professional Overseers and Abbey enthusiasts.

Thatcher is an Overseer belonging to the Abbey of the Everyman. He handles the wolfhounds and is considered the “Hound Master” at The Office of The High Overseer in Holger Square within the Distillery District of Dunwall. For the first year of a wolfhound’s life, it is trained by someone outside the Abbey. Often they come from his fathers facility, but a smaller majority of them are shipped to Dunwall from different establishments across the Isles. Only when the training is complete do the wolfhounds move to the Abbey and become Thatcher’s responsibility. He is in overall charge of the Abbey’s wolfhounds and has authority over other Overseers in matters relating to them. When Thatcher first arrived at the Office of the High Overseer years ago he was an apprentice to Hound Master Warton, however in recent years the older man has taken residence in an Overseer outpost in Serkonos to over see the hounds there, leaving his trainee the new Hound Master of Dunwall.

The 28th day of the Month of Songs. He was born only a single day before the Fugue Feast which is an indeterminate period of sanctioned anarchy that follows the end of the set calendar year. After the 28th day of the Month of Songs, the new year does not immediately begin, instead a period “outside the calendar” takes place. A decree from the standing High Overseer of the Abbey of the Everyman both initiates the Feast and concludes it in “a day or two” when specific cosmological signs are observed. Due to his date of birth being so close to the unpredictable event that is the Fugue Feast, Thatcher often dreads his birthday. The event brings him great anxiety due to its lawlessness and disorder.

Thatcher doesn’t really think about sexual acts all that often, he’s never felt desire of the skin like he knows other people crave. He supposes he’s just been too busy to ever think about another person in such an intimate way. When it comes to what attracts him, he isn’t entirely sure. He knows the social normalcy is for a man such as himself to be solely attracted to women, but he’s found himself watching men with a thickness in his throat more than once. Growing up he was taught that partners of the same sex were sinful, and that only men and women could feel true love for one another. Thatcher often believes there to be something wrong with him, in his mind finding attraction towards another man is morally and physically wrong. But when he catches glimpses of his fellow Overseers changing in the bunks or ing cigars between fingers and lips Thatcher reminds himself of the first and sixth strictures- Wandering Gaze and Wanton Flesh. The Outsider was tempting him, his despicable desires are but a test of his faith and he would find the strength to prevail. Or so he forces himself to believe.

Thatcher has fairly short cropped hair that’s nearly black in color. His hair is thick and usually disheveled, hidden away by the hood of his uniform and often never seen much. It has a slight wave to it, not completely straight but not too curly either. He always keeps it short, never longer than his ears, and often cuts the sides short and keeps the top longer. His hair mostly does whatever it wants, he never tries to style or tame it due to its unruly nature.

Due to being a Northerner his skin is somewhat paler in complexion compared to those in the Southern isles. The city in which he was born, Wynnedown, has a long streak of gloomy weather for a majority of the year. Often times the skies are grey and the winds are fierce, however it rains far more than it snows and during the right part of the year it’s weather is fairly pleasant. Growing up in such conditions has strengthened his tolerance for the cold and weakened his resistance to heat, his rather fair skin easily burns in the right conditions.

═ ∘◦❦◦∘ ═

• S c a r s •

═ ∘◦❦◦∘ ═

Thatcher has quite a few scars marring his skin however none are often seen because of his full bodied Overseer’s uniform. The majority of them he’d earned in his childhood, the worse of them, although he’s gained a few in combat in recent years. Along the juncture between his right shoulder and neck lay rows of faded puncture scars from hounds teeth, they dip along his collarbone and across his shoulder blade. Other rows of hounds deep bite marks can be found along his right calf, left hip, and more prominently at his left wrist. When he was younger one of his father’s rather aggressive wolfhounds had gotten ahold of him and would’ve mauled him to death if he hadn’t struck it across its head with a nearby stone repeatedly. In the process of attempting to protect his neck from its snapping teeth he had held out his left arm, deflecting the beast only temporarily before it latched itself into the crook of his neck and shoulder. By the end of it, it was Thatcher that had been the focus of his father’s anger- not the hound that had nearly killed his own son.

Another rather noticeable scar can be found at his left brow. It’s roughly an inch and a half in length and runs diagonally from the natural curve of his eyebrow up towards his hairline. Since he’d received it the hair of his brow along the scar hasn’t grown back, cutting his eyebrow into two uneven sections.

Perhaps the worst of them litter his back. Long jagged scars varying in length and depth almost cover the entirety of his back with broken ugly lines. Another culprit of his fathers ill temper. They aren’t something he’ll ever speak of, only glad that he can’t see them. His father had owned a hound whip, a harsh tool used to break the more wild canines- it was akin to a bullwhip. After his father had seen his young son grow close to the baker’s boy, had seen them perhaps /too/ close one night, he had turned the whip against Thatcher. Preaching of the strictures and his son’s “unholy” nature. After that, Thatcher never spoke to the baker’s boy again, to this day he grows weary when in close proximity to other men. That stinging pain was forever ingrained in him, not only along his back in the form of brutal scarring- but in his mentality.

Thatcher is mildly lactose intolerant, it’s a minor annoyance to him however it’s rare for him to ever consume dairy products. He isn’t extremely intolerant of dairy, although if he consumes a lot of it within a day his stomach turns to knots and he’ll feel nauseous. Most of the time he’ll just ignore the fact that he probably /shouldn’t/ butter his bread, only coming to regret that he had later on if he finds himself feeling ill.

Although to others he may appear completely normal and well put together, he suffers from severe PTSD. Post traumatic stress disorder is a disorder in which a person has difficulty recovering after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. The condition may last months or years, with triggers that can bring back memories of the trauma accompanied by intense emotional and physical reactions. There’s specific things that will cause him to seize up or will induce panic attacks and he often flinches at excessive hand movements, although it’s a hard thing to notice unless one is actively looking for him to react. He has frequent nightmares that plague his sleep and most nights he refuses to rest, due to his insomnia dark circles seem to be permanently painted beneath his eyes. Outwardly Thatcher appears to be a bright young man with his head in the right space, but what goes unseen contradicts what people seem to know of him heavily. The man is a skilled actor, his father didn’t raise a weak willed son.

His father was a cruel, cruel man. Thatchers earliest memory of him was being drug by his hair out the back door of their house followed by the sharp sting of his father’s belt. He always addressed his father with “yes sir” and “no sir,” never once had he called him “dad,” never had he felt love for him. His fathers expectations for him were beyond reachable and he expected too much from him as a young boy. Growing up his father had been unbearably strict, causing Thatcher physical harm when he did anything less than perfect from the moment he could walk. He drilled into Thatcher each stricture and their teachings, often times smacking him with a ruler or wooden spoon any time he forgot a word or spoke them out of order. His father had owned a well established business of raising wolfhounds for warfare Overseers across the isles, his hounds pedigree was exceptional and their training was precise. They were his prized possessions and he cared for them more than he did for Thatcher, his own son.

The woman is an unknown anomaly to him. He’s never known much about her other than her name, Ryla, and what little information about her his father rarely gives. There’s a portrait of her hanging on the wall in his childhood house beside a window, he re as a young boy he’d stand beneath it and often wonder what she may have been like. Sometimes he’d place wildflowers beside the painting on the windowsill, to his fathers disapproval. From what he gathered over the years, snippets of information his father provided, she had left them soon after Thatcher was born. He understands why she may have gone, his father was anything but a nice man, but that doesn’t excuse the feeling of abandonment Thatcher feels. All he knows is that she left her own child in the hands of a monster, and she never looked back, never cared enough to know what had become of him.

• S i b l i n g (s) •

═ ∘◦❦◦∘ ═

Thatcher has no siblings, and that’s perhaps another reason for his fathers desire for perfection from him. Due to Thatcher being the man’s only son, his only heir to uphold the Hayes name and reputation, he couldn’t allow for Thatcher to fail and tarnish his family’s legacy and standing within the Abbey of the Everyman.

Wolfhound.

Wolfhounds are a breed of canine domesticated from the feral Tyvian hounds used primarily as guard animals. They can also be found prowling the cities of Dunwall and Karnaca. These canines are known for their aggressive tendencies, strength, powerful bite, superior sense of smell, and unyielding loyalty.

═ ∘◦❦◦∘ ═

Thatcher’s wolfhound, Alpen, is extremely intelligent. Her nose is perhaps a greater weapon than her sharp bite, for she can track nearly any scent in varying terrains. She is a ferocious thing that seems to have no fears, standing strong at her master’s side through battles and never fleeing with her tail between her legs. Alpen seems to understand his every word- even when he isn’t giving her a trained command. She knows the difference between down time and when she has a job to do. During patrols she’s always on high alert and tends to be more aggressive towards others, however back in the barracks she’s sweet and as playful as a pup. Although at times she may seem friendly, she’s still a dangerous creature that only listens to her master.

• R e l a t i o n s h i p •

═ ∘◦❦◦∘ ═

Thatcher loves his hound more than anything else in the world, quite literally, and would fall apart without her. Alpen is his loyal best friend, he can tell her anything without fear that she’ll spread his words and knows that she has no judgment. Often times the man finds himself having full conversations with his hound all the while she sits there patiently with an occasional head tilt and lolling tongue. When the pair aren’t out on patrol Thatcher enjoys throwing sticks for her to fetch in the courtyard or along the banks of the Wrenhaven. Although Hounds are strictly meant to sleep in their kennels Thatcher will sometimes sneak her into his bunk where it’s more comfortable and return her to the kennels before dawn, a few of his fellow Overseers are aware of his little habit but don’t comment on it. Often times he’ll even sleep in the kennels alongside his beloved hound and he isn’t the only one that’s made a habit out of it. Thatcher had met the young wolfhound at the Hound Pits Pub once he’d been first stationed in Dunwall years ago. She had been tossed to the streets outside after loosing a fight against another hound in the pits and her master meant to put her down due to the loss, however Thatcher had intervened- saving her life. Since then Alpen has never left his side, her loyalty is fiercely tied to the man whom saved her.

Zachary cannot the reasoning behind his first name, Only that he shares it with his great great grandfather and that it was his Father whom named him as such apparently fond of the man, That it’s of Serkonian origin, besides that as far as he’s aware it holds no greater value. His middle name doesn’t hold much value either, though he does share it with a brand of Fancy Cigars, His mother thought the name would bring thoughts of Nobility due to its nature of Old Court position. Finally the name Granger, His family name, shares its meaning with a slang term for Farmers… Whether the slang originated from his family line? he know not as rumors persist to this day of his linage once holding prominence in the land.

Zachary is a Lord of the Isle Of Morley though his name didn’t always hold a noble title, he was born on the outskirts of a forgotten, unmarked village of unimportance to the north of Alba know as Roufort to a relatively modest family of Ranchers learning the land and herding Blood Oxen. As Vice Overseer of the City of Caulkenny the man is intensely devoted to not only his work but his faith as well, even those in the Abbey itself would call the man a zealot. The man has spent the majority of his life in the profession being kidnapped at the age of twelve and it’s been all he’s ever known since, his place within the organization is clear and he holds it with pride and unquestioning, unwavering faith. He wishes for the Abbey to rule each and every land and guide the population to faith themselves. He is punctual and deadly in his skill, to enemies of the faith his bite is worse than his bark so to speak, quicker to actions then words, shoot first ask questions later. His rough and tumble personality and quickness to rudeness and violence have ostracized him from his fellow overseers and many spread rumors behind the mans back. Those whom are loyal to him are mostly afraid of the man or worse just as cruel and zealous as him, though there is one man whom he was grown attached to without such foul forcefulness. A young Hound Master under his wing follows the mans lead willingly and even questions the mans orders and actions quite frequently, in turn he’s taken the man under his wing and made him his right hand man to the slight disapproval of his own Squadron.

═ ∘◦❦◦∘ ═

The most clear quality of the man is his double personality and quickness to anger but slowness to show such emotions, frequently putting on a mask of charm, intelligence and stability to better manipulate persons of high society and blend in amongst his fellow overseers when in command of his men. Corrupted by political power and his many torturous experiences the man snaps and switches between calm and angry within a moments notice, he has little respect for others not of the faith and is willing to step on as many people as possible to achieve his goals no matter the consequences. The man uses his status and devotion to the strictures to excuse his actions and back up his opinions on matters with ease, unless you the strictures you are an enemy of the faith in his mind. In combat and duty he frequently flaunts his gunfighting skill and shows little to no mercy to those who stand in his way, his gun often speaks for him more than his words do. At heart and unmasked the man is attached to his rural roots and plainly spoken, he prefers the old ways of doing things, the big cities and modernization is something he dislikes and avoids still even riding horses whenever he’s given the chance. He is cruel yet calm in demeanor, cold and calculating each movement has purpose and cause. He is very set in his own ways and thoughts and is a hard man to convince or change though there is one person he finds himself growing attached to with time- someone whom he finds himself being kind to for the good of another and not himself…

• R e l a t i o n s h i p •

═ ∘◦❦◦∘ ═

The mans relationships are far and few between but when around Thatcher the Hound Master he often finds himself most oddly comfortable, he holds a strange liking to the younger man taking to him much like a son he never had and frequently treats the man sternly yet extremely protectively. He’s constantly trying to teach the man lessons about life, of being an overseer and faith in general. The men frequently get into banter and arguments but always forgive each other and even occasionally they manage to change each other’s opinions on matters. In the end he won’t it it but he holds a fatherly love of the younger man and uses his higher station to drag him and his hound around on missions and even occasionally to meals, target practice, or bars for down time together. He isn’t sure why he’s taken such a role over the boy but doesn’t seem to mind and is always ready to assist (even if his assistance is questionable at best). The two seem to be polar opposites and make quite a team if not a strange one, Thatcher is pretty much the only person he is constantly bouncing ideas and conversation off of wether he likes it or not. Thatcher is his right hand man and bickering partner, he may be the only person he puts any real trust into as an individual. He’s even taken a liking to the mans hound and frequently offers to care for the animal despite Thatcher’s protests.

Through his high walls and many complexities Thatcher is a rather softhearted soul, he has a gentleness to him not displayed in many other overseers. He has a strong work ethic and dutifully gives his every waking moment to the Abbey of The Everyman and it’s religion. Thatcher lives by the Strictures every overseer must, without complaint. He is loyal to the high overseer and knows his place in the ranks. Although his religion and profession expects much of him Thatcher is keen to live up to those high standards, perhaps even more than most overseers who seem to pick and choose the days they abide by the Strictures. To him, the Abbey protects the populace of the Isles, and he’s proud to such a noble cause.

Thatcher internalizes many of his emotions and thoughts and portrays himself as a bright young man whose eager to bust heretics and commit himself to the Abbey. However a majority of his facade is an elaborate act in order to please those around him, especially his father. He has many levels to his inner psyche, his existence isn’t only that of hunting heretics- although he wishes it was so simple. Many things are broken within him although he’d never let on to such a fact, sometimes it’s difficult to keep up the act whilst other days it’s fairly easy. His moods are a constant wave, shifting up and down and as uneven as the ocean. Many of his complexities stem from his father’s abuse towards him as a child, his trauma runs deep and there isn’t a soul alive whose ever witnessed Thatcher loose his grip. He plans to keep it that way.

Thatchers depression shows itself in the form of a false smile and bright attitude. He dislikes allowing others to see such a dark, raw and emotional side of him and protects himself from prying questions with a false sense of constant joy. Much of his depression and dour moods are internalized so much so that he never allows himself to properly run through the motions of his emotions. Often times he seeks solitude in order to gather himself, he craves a solitary place where he can be the sole occupant of without worries of fearing if he’s expressed too much of himself. It’s difficult for him to find any time alone due to his occupation and place of residence, it seems there’s always a pair of eyes on him or a listening ear. Thatcher can only pretend to be half the man he truly is for so long, sometimes he needs to break something and scream his throat raw until he feels a little less empty. Although the feeling of relief never seems to last long.

Not much seems to offend him at this point, being an Overseer he’s heard every slur and degrading remark in the book. Very little gets to him. He has thick skin from not only his occupation but also from his fathers harsh way of raising him. If he were to be offended you’d never be able to pick it up.

Thatcher has never been in love before, at least he doesn’t suspect that he has. There was once a time he’d felt a sensation close to “Love” however it was fleeting and “wrong” in nature. Love is a somewhat sensitive topic for him to consider, he’s never felt parental love and often has difficulty traversing such feelings. Perhaps the closest thing to love he’s ever felt is his bond with Alpen, he loves the canine in the way anyone does a pet.

Growing up the sight of other children and their loving parents always made him jealous. He had felt envious of them and had always wished he could walk in their shoes, his father was a monstrous man and Thatcher had always feared him. Now a young man and no longer a child Thatcher still holds a slight jealousy towards those around him with better upbringings, he feels it the sharpest when his fellow Overseers take leave to visit family out of the city. He has no one to send letters to, nobody to visit during time off. He has only his father whom he despises.

His everyday attire consists of the typical overseers standard steel gray and gold uniform with a wool material and pouches for weaponry. It’s thick enough to provide warmth and protection against the perpetual Gristol drizzle with an inner animal skin water resistant lining. The ensemble includes standard black leather work boots and work gloves matched with a thick pair of black pants. To top off the uniform is a standard golden overseers mask. The majority of the uniform is deep gray in color save for a few golden accents at the cuffs and along some hemming. Thatcher wears the simple uniform on a near daily basis unless he’s patrolling the streets of Dunwall or out on some other mission.

Although he rarely ever wears such formal clothing Thatcher has a ceremonial uniform for special occasions within the Abbey. It is used for attending weddings, parades, important gatherings and other such events. This uniform is a rich navy blue in color with far more frequent golden accents that are woven much more intricately than that of his standard and warfare uniforms. At each sleeve of the jacket, above the cuff, is sewn boldly in gold thread the symbol of the Abbey. A decorative white and grey bandolier crosses the chest and a gold plated sheath rests at his left hip. Each shoulder has a fringed golden pad whilst golden lining runs in horizontal lines across the jackets entire chest, gold buttons running neatly down its front. White satin gloves fit snuggly around his hands and his pants share the same slate grey color as his silk bandolier sash. Polished black calf high boots with a slight higher heel and thinner leather make up the rest of the fancy uniform. However when adorning his ceremonial uniform Thatcher isn’t required to wear his golden overseers mask, in fact during such important gatherings many overseers are forbade from covering their faces. Thatcher has only ever worn the stuffy thing once and he isn’t too fond of formal gatherings.

Thatcher often wears a loose fitting cloth shirt and a pair of long cloth pants perhaps just a single size too big for him, often times they’ll slip a few centimeters down to expose his sharp hip bones and lower abdomen. At night the man will sometimes shed his shirt altogether if he grows hot and sweat slicked from a restless night of tossing and turning in his bunk.

When Thatcher patrols he trades in his standard getup and adorns his warfare uniform that is better suited for action. The coat is made of a higher grade wool than that of the standard uniform and shares its water resistant inner lining, back s lay partially over a piece of cloth covering the rear of his head while the front provides protection. Calf high black steel toed work boots made from blood ox hide are matched with black steel knuckled gloves with ample padding. The upgraded uniform includes simple black work pants and an added bandolier with holsters for pistols and a sheath at a hip for his sword. The color scheme of his warfare uniform is close to the exact same as his standard attire. To complete the uniform is of course his scowling golden overseers mask stylized in the face of Benjamin Holger. The symbol of the Abbey: a trident ing through a capital C shows prominently upon the forehead. These same symbols are embroidered onto the sleeves of his dark steel gray jacket.

Growing up he never had much opportunity to indulge in recreational activities, his father had such a tight collar on him he never experienced fun pastimes that other children partook in. Instead of learning to tailor or build, Thatcher was taught how to hunt and kill animals from a young age. His father took him on many hunting excursions and taught him how to track and efficiently take down game with a plethora of weapons. Often times the man would bring along with them wolfhounds in order to train them to track and test their skill against another living being. Thatcher always hated hunting trips. He hated watching the life drain from an animals eyes, a glint smothered and turned dull in their blank staring pupils. His heart had always been soft, his hands always gentle, but his father saw it as a weakness and had always tried to toughen him up by putting a gun in his palms and forcing him to kill. In current day Thatcher is a skilled huntsman and tracker, however he doesn’t enjoy putting such skills to use.

The man can draw decently, as a child he often had to find ways to entertain himself and drawing had been one of them. It gave him a sort of outlet, an escape from his living hell, however when his father had found his hidden sketches he’d made Thatcher watch as he burned them all one by one. Art was a waste of time, no real man enjoyed such a thing, and his father made sure to drill such knowledge into his son. Although he stopped sketching things for numerous years after the incident, Thatcher sometimes finds himself in current day drawing landscapes and moments in time on spare pieces of paper. However after every piece is finished he sets it to flame, his fathers words whispering in his ears.

═ ∘◦❦◦∘ ═

Thatcher was raised in a very abusive household. Growing up his father always tormented and struck fear into him, expecting absolute obedience and striking out when he didn’t receive it. As a child he learned that any wrong answer brought pain after it which instilled within him many complexities, some of which are very apparent in his adulthood. He has only bad memories of his father, his scars can attest to that fact. The man would order him to recite the Strictures everyday and if Thatcher missed but a word the steel of his fathers belt was there to remind him of what he forgot. His father had the habit of drowning himself internally with liquor and his aggressive behaviors would only worsen whilst he was under the influence. Distinctly, Thatcher re the first time his father had drunk around him. At the age of four he had been awoken by loud crashes coming from the kitchen, when he investigated the boy found his father drunk with buckets of salt in either hand- glass and blood pooled at his feet. The man had whispered to his son with wide paranoid eyes and shallow breaths that smelled of liquor, instructing him to take a bucket of salt and pour it around his bed. His reasoning was that the Outsider was beneath the floorboards, that the demon sought to kill them and that it would steal Thatcher’s eyes if he didn’t protect himself with salt. The ordeal traumatized him, such as many other acts his father committed. One such memory that perhaps might be his darkest took place when he was six. There had been a litter of pups born from one of his father’s most prized canines, however there had been a very weak runt amongst them, feeble and insignificant compared to the rest. His father had planned on “getting rid” of it the moment it was born, however Thatcher had convinced the man to allow him to care for the wolfhound pup. With reluctance his father allowed him to raise it up, from that point on the hound was practically his best friend and only source of comfort in his dark home life. Thatcher taught the pup many tricks and whenever his father was in a drunken sleep the young boy would bring the hound inside and into his bed. Overtime the pup grew to be a hound although it was still smaller in frame than it’s siblings and much more tame due to Thatchers gentle hand with it, his father was disgusted at its weak traits and at his son’s softness. To teach his son a lesson he’d never forget his father had one day slipped a rope around the hound and lead it to the shed out back, tugging along a reluctant Thatcher by his hair. Once in the shed his father had tied the hound to a pole and proceeded to place a gun in the boy’s small hands, a sinking feeling had overtaken the young boy in that moment. His father had then ordered Thatcher to shoot his own hound, preaching that weak feelings would have consequences- that when he grew up to be an overseer his soft emotions would get him or his companions killed. That this world had no place for any gentleness. When Thatcher refused to kill his best friend his father had smacked him across the face with the guns hilt, forced his hands to hold the weapon, held his head in place with a fist in his hair and covered the boys grip with his own around the firearm. He whispered in his son’s ear, commanding for him to “Watch boy, at what happens to weak things” as he pressed down on Thatcher’s finger and pulled the trigger.

Thatcher spent his teenage years preaching the strictures and working alongside his father training wolfhounds for the Abbey. He enjoyed most of the hounds however some of them had been especially aggressive, a good trait according to his father, and they were more prone to biting him. Thatcher never blamed them for their anger, they’d been taught with cruelty and learned to kill- aggressiveness was what kept them alive. He had learned many of his father’s training techniques and was used as a sort of training dummy in drills, his father would force him to adorn a padded body suit and fist fight hounds- one day they would fight heretics and Thatcher was in charge of preparing them for those physical altercations. Raising the young pups had been his favorite part, however he always dreaded when a litter was born because his father would drown the runt, no matter how much Thatcher pleaded with him not to. All he ever earned was a beating in the end of those conversations, so eventually he learned to hold his tongue when his father prepared a bucket for the runt of every litter. If the grown hounds hadn’t rose to his fathers expectations during training he would put them down, often times forcing his son to go through with the act. Thatcher still has nightmares of it to this day, in them he’s always looking into the innocent eyes of a different hound, a gun leveled between their eyes. Those dreams always end with him waking up in a cold sweat, agonized yelps ringing in his ears.

As he grew older his fathers dark presence over him only worsened, however after years of his abuse Thatcher learned to appease him. Thatcher became pliant to the abuse due to his crippling fear of fighting back and facing those horrific consequences. Although Thatcher had never wanted to become an Overseer, a dream forced upon him by his father, he fantasized every day of the Trials of Aptitude. In his mind the trials would free him from his fathers strictness and mistreatment of him, however Thatcher had no way of knowing how much worse it would get for him from there. Due to the long lineage of well renowned Overseers in his family the Abbey had its eye on Thatcher from a young age and were eager to bring him into their ranks when he came of age.

For a brief while he had been stationed at a handful of different outposts in western and midland Gristol, although he never stayed in those locations long. Thatcher spent his time rigorously training to become a respectable overseer alongside a wave of other new fresh faced recruits, the young man exceeded in his training and was soon hand picked to those at the office of the high overseer. In the beginning the transition from Morleyan culture to that of Gristolian was rather jarring for him, especially when he’d landed himself in none other than Dunwall proper itself- the capital of the Isles. Growing up his father held a strong hatred for anything relating to Gristol and the crown, teaching Thatcher that he too should have such a hatred. He had been taught everything about the Morley Insurrection perhaps just as much as the teachings of the strictures, however he wasn’t a hateful soul. The first few months he’d spent in Dunwall it wasn’t uncommon for his fellow Gristol native born overseers to flick him shit and test his resolve, a majority of his days were spent holding onto his slipping resolve and bitting his tongue at every attempt to rile him. He had escaped his fathers abuse only to find himself right back under the heel of a new form of aggression. Overtime the hateful frenzy many partook in towards him due to his Morleyan roots dimmed in his fellow overseers thoughts until eventually, after Thatcher had continued to prove himself time and time again, they began to see him as one of their own. They respected him for having a spine and his likable demeanor quickly gained his favor amongst them. Once he became the Hound Master few ever prodded him again however there was always someone whom seemed to despise him due to where he was born, but Thatcher’s thick skin was difficult to penetrate with words of hatred.

In present day Thatcher finds himself alongside vice overseer Zachary, his newfound companion, traveling across the isles on a mission to spread the teachings of the Strictures and protect the populace from dangerous heretics. Together the pair, along with Zachary’s arsenal of men, are quickly becoming feared by those who thrive in the dark arts and otherworldly happenings. Everywhere they step foot the Outsider’s followers are dealt with accordingly, they’ve yet to meet their match and perhaps they never will. The overseers of the Abbey are certainly a force to be fearful of, especially the Vice Overseer and Hound Master borne from the hills of Morley.

The future holds many uncertainties for Thatcher, although he likes to indulge the thought that perhaps one day he’ll finally find meaning in his life. /True/ meaning. The Abbey of the Everyman gives him purpose and order, however he wouldn’t have chosen such a life as an Overseer’s for himself if it had ever been up to him. His fathers harshness and manipulation over him forced Thatcher to truly believe that he could be nobody but an Overseer, that to be something other than a heretic hunter would result in his quick demise one way or another. His father has his teeth so deeply sunk into Thatcher that he fears the man will somehow know if he strays from the path he was instructed his entire life to follow. Thatcher fears him so strongly that often times he’ll look over his shoulder to convince himself that the man isn’t there, lingering and awaiting for prime opportunity to come for him, although they’re separated by a long stretch of terrain and an entire expanse of ocean. His paranoia runs so deep, his life feels consumed by his father’s presence no matter the distance between them, and for that Thatcher only hopes that in his future he will one day be rid of such a feeling of dread. Be free of a living nightmare. The only time Thatcher may truly feel at ease in his entire life, finally free, is the day his father takes his last breath. Perhaps then he’ll see clarity, know what to do with true freedom finally in his hands. However, until then, Thatcher doesn’t know what the future holds for him.
