Animation, what projects should I do first?

I'm planning on doing animations soon, after I get some more progress. I'm hoping to get some advice from you guys on what my next BIG step should be. And who knows? Maybe I'll even do some commissions for free, and do some short animations for some people. I'm actually already starting one for my friend Mimi.
