BTS recently broke Adele’s longstanding iTunes record when “Black Swan” reached No. 1 in 104 countries, more than any song in history. (The record was short-lived, but more on that in a bit.) Now, the group has made iTunes history once more, becoming the first act to have two songs reach No. 1 in 100 countries.

The Korean pop septet most recently reached the 100-country threshold with “Your Eyes Tell,” a lush, string-laden ballad off the group’s new Japanese album, Map of the Soul: 7 - The Journey. The collection contains Japanese versions of songs off 2018’s Love Yourself: Answer, 2019’s Map of the Soul: Persona and 2020’s Map of the Soul: 7, along with four new Japanese tracks, including “Your Eyes Tell.”

Map of the Soul: 7 - The Journey came out last Tuesday, July 14. The album debuted at No. 115 on the Billboard 200 with two days of sales and no physical release, and it reached No. 2 on the World Albums chart, sandwiched between Map of the Soul: 7 and Love Yourself: Answer. In also dominated Japan’s Oricon Albums Chart, selling 564,000 copies in its first week and become the bestselling album of the year in the country.

Love Yourself: Answer experienced a major boost on the Billboard 200 thanks to Map of the Soul: 7 - The Journey, vaulting 50 spots from No. 196 to No. 146. Meanwhile, “Your Eyes Tell” became BTS’s record 21st No. 1 hit on the World Digital Song Sales chart.

Despite being the only group to have two songs top the iTunes charts in more than 100 countries, BTS does not claim the song with the most iTunes chart summits around the world. That honor belongs to a member of the group, V, whose “Sweet Night” has reached No. 1 in 109 countries and counting. Simultaneously, BTS member RM’s Mono mixtape became the first album by an Asian act to reach No. 1 on iTunes in 100 countries; its chart-topping total currently sits at 106 countries.

At this point, it’s difficult to argue that BTS isn’t the biggest musical group in the world, at least when looking at acts which are currently still producing new music which makes a noticeable impact on charts all around the globe. They are constantly showing that they can rack up impressive stream counts on platforms like Spotify and YouTube, and they are one of the only major players in the business who can still sell an album, as most acts now rely almost exclusively on streaming.

Whenever BTS has a new album to deliver, everybody else better get out of the way, because there’s a great chance it’s heading straight for the No. 1 spot...but this frame, something is amiss. Not only did the band’s latest offering fail to reach the top rung on the Billboard 200 albums ranking, it didn’t even rise into the upper half of the 200-space tally.

So, what happened?

BTS’s new album Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey ~ reaches the Billboard 200 this frame, but its starting point is not a very impressive one. The title debuts at No. 115, making it the band’s second-lowest-charting title yet. It comes in behind only The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 2, which stalled at No. 171, but that was way back in 2015, before they were proper superstars in America.

What hurt Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey ~ the most in the U.S. was its release date. The vast majority of albums are released early on Fridays, as that is when the tracking period officially begins in nearly every music market in the world. Songs and full-lengths have from the beginning of Friday until the end of the following Thursday in which to rack up as many streams and sales as possible, and all that activity helps place it on the Billboard charts (looking only at America here) the following frame.

Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey ~ was released on Wednesday, July 15, which means it lands at No. 115 on the Billboard 200 after only two days of tracking activity. That’s a pretty serious handicap, and when that context is applied, its lowly starting position isn’t actually so bad, as there are countless well-known musicians who wouldn’t have made it to the ranking at all if they were in the same position.

It’s also worth noting that Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey ~ was only available on streaming sites and for purchase digitally, while a physical edition of the title should be for sale in the United States next month. BTS has separated themselves from every other name in the industry with their ability to sell hundreds of thousands of copies of a new release on physical formats, and their fans have taken to collecting them. The fact that buying the new release on CD wasn’t an option may also have kept some listeners from purchasing the set.

There is still a chance—a fairly good one, actually—that Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey ~ will advance on the Billboard 200 in the coming frames. In fact, after its first full tracking period has wrapped, it might jump up the tally, though where it will land is hard to predict. The title may also improve its standing when fans can buy a physical copy in America, though the timing of that launch may not be ideal for sending the project toward the top of the most competitive albums ranking in the country.

BTS almost landed their tenth No. 1 on Billboard’s World Albums chart this week with their new release Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey ~, which features a few brand new cuts as well as Japenese renditions of many of their biggest hits of the past several years. The title opens at No. 2, and as it appears on the ranking for the first time, several other projects from the same group return, giving them control over a surprising number of spots on the short ranking.

This week, BTS releases fill half of all the spots on the World Albums chart, including five positions inside the top 10.

Leading the way once again is Map of the Soul: 7, which has now controlled the tally for 17 nonconsecutive frames. The set has continued to produce big hits, and this frame, album cut “Filter” rises to a new peak of No. 2 on the World Digital Song Sales tally.

As new full-length Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey ~ launches in the runner-up spot, former bestseller Love Yourself: Answer keeps at No. 3, meaning BTS’s name appears in the highest three rungs this frame.

Love Yourself: Tear is back inside the top 10 this time around, as it lifts from No. 11 to No. 9. Including the three titles mentioned just above, Love Yourself: Tear and a stationary Map of the Soul: Persona, five BTS titles take up space inside the top 10 this week.

Back on the ranking once again are both Love Yourself: Her and BTS World, the soundtrack that accompanied their mobile game of the same name. Both releases spent time at No. 1, and in the months and years since they were first released, they have fallen off the chart and returned over and over, and that cycle is sure to continue.

As if charting seven albums wasn’t enough for the group, one of its is also present on the list with his solo venture. Suga, who sometimes operates under his Agust D moniker when sharing music on his own, sees his recent mixtape D-2 dip to No. 15, and it may depart the chart very soon.
