ʙᴀᴄᴋsᴛᴏʀʏ:
Penelope Wilson was born to Stephine and Katsuya Hinata. She had a twin sister but sadly when Stephine was in labor only one of the children had survived. But even then , Penelope was seen as their miracle baby and she was loved by them both. She was the center of their world and she shared a wonderful and loving bond with her parents.
Her mother was part Dutch mixed with French and Italian and her father was a pure Japanese. They both met one night at a concert that took place in London and it was love at first sight. But neither side of their family approved of their relationship, but that didn’t stop the love that formed between them and soon after Stephine had ran away with him and got eloped, After finding out that they were parents to be, both Stephine and Katsuya decide to move from their little apartment in Tokyo to the countryside in Hokkaido. There they started their own little farm and thought it would be a good life to raise their daughter and teach her the importance of hard work and survival skills. Her father was a CEO of a well known business company that handled unfair court cases and sometimes he had the options to work from home or take a 4 hour and 40 minute ride on the bullet train back and forth between home and Tokyo. While her mother ran a little book store in the nearest town and also sold a few of their produce that she would harvest.
Living in Japan had its ups and downs for Penelope, mostly because she didn’t look exactly like all the other kids. Her hair wasn’t black like theirs , instead it was long and blonde that stuck out amongst the crowd and her eyes were a piercing gray color. Her skin complexion was somewhat similar but she was always just a tiny bit on the darker shade. Speaking Japanese was a bit of a struggle too, sure she knew some words and how to write a bit and read , but speaking English or sometimes Dutch came easy.
“Mum I don’t like it here, I’m just so … different.”
Penelope sighed in defeat as she dropped herself into the wooden chair and laid her head down on the table.
“And what don’t you like about being different?”
Her mother asked as she continued to maneuver her way around the kitchen while cooking tonight’s dinner.
“Everything. I stand out and everyone avoids me, can I dye my hair? Maybe then I can kinda fit in.”
Hearing her daughter’s response , she smiled to herself and chuckled.
“There’s nothing wrong with being different. If we all dyed our hair the same color , acted the same way , spoke the same way and did the same thing , wouldn’t you think that life would be boring?”
Thinking about it for a moment , Penelope knew her mother was right. If everyone looked , dressed and responded the same way it would be dull and a boring life , there wouldn’t be any uniqueness or difference.
“Just be yourself , you’ll make a friend and things will change, just got to give it time my poppy flower.”
Her mother chimed before placing a soft kiss on her head.
Mothers always know best , but still Penelope would mostly spend her time alone, either tending to the crops , feeding the animals or reading in her favorite spot , under a sakura tree that overlooked the valley from where their house sat. Even though she was alone , she enjoyed the peace and tranquility that came with it, up until she met a girl named Akira.
She was a loquacious girl that always asked a lot of questions but didn’t show any signs of surly behavior. Instead she didn’t mind Penelope being different , she accepted the girl with open arms and soon after they slowly became friends.
It wasn’t long before Penelope was slowly adjusting to her life in Japan, things were starting to look up for her, that is until her mother had received a call from her father in Belgium, discussing Penelope’s grandmother’s illness and that she probably wouldn’t be alive much longer. Her dying request was to see her granddaughter Penelope in person. Of course her mother didn’t say anything after she hung up the phone , but then again neither of her parents ever mentioned or talked about her family .
“Mum, you okay?”
Penelope asked, sensing distress and sadness from her mother who was still silent and sitting down on the couch while gazing out the window.
“That was … ahem, that was your grandfather. Your grandma , my mother , wants to see you in person.”
Her mother spoke softly, trying to hide the sadness in voice.
“So are we going to see her? Is it urgent?”
Penelope asked , though what she really wanted to ask was “why haven’t you or dad spoken about any of our family?” “Why haven’t I seen them?” “Or why haven’t they come to visit us all these years?”
“It’s not as easy as it sounds, my love. See your father’s family and my family , they didn’t approve of our marriage, so instead, we did what we thought was right and became a family because I was carrying you. We left our apartment and moved out here where we could live as a family. Me and your father had grown tired of his mother’s and sister’s puerile attempt to get him to leave us, not to mention they even threatened to harm you and you were only a few months old.”
Listening intently without saying a word , this was the first time Penelope learned that she had an aunt. But if the situation was this critical , why can’t her grandparents FaceTime them? They wouldn’t need to leave Japan and her parents wouldn’t need to deal with whatever drama that would await them.
“Then why can’t my grandparents FaceTime me? That way we won’t have to go and she can still see me?”
It was so easy and the problem can be solved.
“That’s what I had offered and explained that I couldn’t just leave , there were things I would need to take care of like the bookstore and the crops and livestock , but your grandfather can be a hardhead man and a stubborn mule. When your father comes home we’ll discuss what we should do , in the meantime come help me set the table for dinner.”
Wiping the tears from her eyes, Stephine stood up and went to get dinner started while Penelope began to set the table.
It wasn’t long before Katsuya came home from work and they all ate dinner and chatted about their day while avoiding the topic about the phone call her mother had gotten. When dinner was over and Penelope had showered and was ready for bed , she laid quietly underneath the duvet while listening to her father and mother discuss the elephant in the room.
Even though her door was closed and her room was far away from her parents bedroom she could still hear her father’s faint voice and he sounded upset.
She could make out a few words like
“アホ” which means idiot or stupid.
“地獄へいけ” go to hell
and “クソくらえ” f*** off or f*** you.
All the words the students at school would say in her presence , but because she had found a friend in Akira, little by little the words and hateful comments targeted at her slowly ceased. Still listening , Penelope could hear her mother’s soft voice trying to calm down her father and telling him to lower his voice so they wouldn’t wake up Penelope. She wasn’t sure when she had fallen asleep but the next morning when she woke up and headed to the kitchen she was greeted by her father.
“おはようペネロペ、朝食はカウンターにあります”
(Good morning Penelope, breakfast is at the counter)
Her father replied while flipping through the newspaper and taking a few sips of his hot coffee from the ceramic mug that Penelope had made in school. She insisted that he didn’t need to keep it because it wasn’t that great in her eyes but her father kept denying it and reassuring her that it was perfect in his eyes and ever since then that’s the only mug he uses.
“母さんはまだ寝てるの?”
(Is mom still sleeping?)
She asked as she picked up a plate filled with rice , cooked salmon , scrambled eggs , blanched vegetables and a bowl of fresh kimchi and sat herself down at the table and across from her father.
“あなたのお母さんは仕事に行き、私は休みを取りました。私わもし私たちが町に行って少し買い物をして、あなたが好きなものを買うことができると思ったら、それは大丈夫ですか?”
(Your mother went to work and I took a day off. I think if we can go to town and do a little shopping and buy what you like, is that okay?)
It wasn’t often that she spent time with her father, not like before when she was little, so when he asked to go shopping her face was suddenly lit up with excitement as she happily nodded her head. Quickly finishing up her breakfast and running along to get ready , Penelope was ready within 45 minutes while her dad was making sure he had his car keys , his watch and wallet.
“準備はいい?”
(Are you ready?)
Her father asked as she came bounding up next to him and nodded her head. She wore a sunflower dress that fell just below her knees , a white cardigan that she draped over her shoulders and paired off her outfit with some white wedges and a cute beige sun hat. Penelope didn’t use a lot of makeup because she had a fair complexion, but she did brush on a light shade of pink blush on her cheeks while placing in her favorite blue eye s. And for her hair , she kept it flowing loosely and free , letting her golden locks cascade down her back like a beautiful waterfall.
Sitting in the car and gazing out the window , Penelope watched as the fields full of rice , corn and other crops that the people grew here turned into buildings , small shops and restaurants and an entire street market. With excitement bubbling inside, Penelope had made a mental list of the things she wanted to buy. First were a few new books to read , maybe another cute dress , a gift for her mother for her birthday and a friendship gift for Akira.
Parking the car and getting out , Penelope had a full hour to look around and shop before she had to meet up with her parents to have lunch.
Strolling through the busy market, Penelope was fascinated by everything and anything they were selling. From fine sewn clothes to live seafood. One of the clothing booths had captured her attention because on a mannequin was a beautiful long sleeve koi fish sakura princess dress that came in white, black and pink. Seeing her intrigued by the clothing , the old lady who ran the shop allowed Penelope to try the dress on and see if she liked how it fits. Ushering her to the back of the store where a dressing room was, Penelope had placed her beige clutch on the stool and proceeded to try on the dress. Glancing at herself in the mirror , she twirled left and then right and emitted a soft giggle to the way the dress moved gracefully with her movements.
She definitely was going to purchase the dress. Grabbing her phone and texting her dad , she began to change back into her sunflower dress and waited outside till he showed.
Showing him the dresses it was hard for Penelope to pick the one she liked the most, so instead , her father offered to buy all three and whatever else she wanted from the lady’s booth. Hearing that , Penelope insisted that her father didn’t have to buy more than just one dress, she would still be grateful for having one. But he wasn’t having it.
“Anything for my little princess”
would always be his reply. People may think that Penelope was spoiled , and they were right , she was , but she didn’t take that for granted and was very grateful and appreciative to her parents.
Having bought half of the clothing from the women’s shop she kept on bowing and thanking them for shopping and insisted that they come again and visit because she would have more new dresses coming in that Penelope would find beautiful. Upon seeing someone spend a lot of money at one booth everyone else tried their best to coax the daughter to come check out their store in hopes she would stop and make a purchase. But Penelope had a list and she kept to it. Next up would be a gift for her mother and friend and then her mother’s bookstore to see if any new collection came in for the week.
Spending almost two hours walking around and trying to find the perfect gifts, Penelope had spotted something that she thought Akira would like.
It was an enameled sunflower photo necklace and a golden chain. If it wasn’t for Akira Penelope’s life wouldn’t have changed. She was grateful to have a good friend and she wanted to show her appreciation. She even bought a Daisy one for her mother and had asked if she could print out a picture there and have the jeweler place the photo inside for her.
With everything set and checked off on her list , her father announced it was time for lunch and they both started to make their way to the little bookstore. Entering in and hearing the little tinkling sounds of the chimes that announced people’s entrance , she heard her mother welcoming them in before she looked up and smiled brightly.
“Well what a surprise! You two are having fun shopping?”
Her mother giggled as she eyed the bags that they were carrying on each arm.
“Oh yes mum! And I even bought you a little gift .. HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY!”
Penelope chimed as she skipped over to her mother and placed a neatly wrapped box with a pretty red bow on it in her hands.
“Poppy flower.. you didn’t have to.”
Her mother mumbled while fighting back tears.
“But I did , I hope you like it.”
Watching her mother unwrap the box and gasping in surprise , more tears fell from her eyes and stained her cheeks as she gave her daughter a hug.
“It’s beautiful, thank you.”
“Here let me help put it on my darling.”
Stepping up and taking the necklace in his hands , her father had hooked the necklace around her mother’s neck before placing a soft kiss on her cheek.
“Now , how about we all head out to have an early birthday lunch for the special birthday women. I made reservations at a restaurant that I’m sure you would love.”
Her father replied. But before they could leave her mother had to close down the and put the shipment away before locking up. Penelope and her father agreed to help put things away to get the job done faster. That is until Penelope ed that she had forgotten her phone on the counter at the jewelry store. Telling her parents that she would be quick , she left the store and went back to retrieve her phone.
Thankfully when she got there the man had noticed it sitting on the counter where she left it but when he went to go look for them they were gone. Bowing and thanking him, Penelope needed to hurry back to help her parents finish cleaning up. But the moment she rounded the corner down the street where she could see the little bookstore , the entire building was up in flames.
Penelope’s life had taken a turn for the worst. She lost both parents that day. When she ran to the building , trying to get to her parents , a police officer was holding her back while she fought , screamed out their names and cried her whole heart. It took the firefighters almost an hour to kill the flames before they could go in and retrieve the bodies. All Penelope could do was watch from afar as they wheeled two body bags on a gurney over to the ambulance before they took them to the hospital to get an autopsy done. She ed she heard people whispering and talking about a fight happening inside the store before gunshots went off and seeing someone dressed in all black from head to toe fleeing from the scene before the building exploded and the fire started to get out of hand.
Everything in her life was taken away in an instant. But the painful truth, the world and life continues on and doesn’t stop to give you a chance to grieve and mourn your loss. Not knowing what to do or who to turn to , Penelope was on her own. Home wasn’t the same anymore. It was much more quiet, lifeless and colorless. Some of her father’s coworkers sent their condolences and some offered to help her put her parents to rest, but Penelope had wanted to bury both her parents underneath the Sakura tree where they could overlook the valley and enjoy the view together.
It wasn’t long that the crops they grew slowly began to wither , the animals they had started to become sickly and die. Penelope tried her best to save the ones she could and began to sell them off to other farmers but in the end , she ended up giving them away for free. Doing farm work alone was harder than it looked for a 13 year old. She still attended school but even then her mind wasn’t focused enough and soon after days began to blur by. Akira started to worry for her and offered her to come stay with her family, but Penelope knew that she wouldn’t be welcomed there, sure Akira was nice and accepting but if her father’s family didn’t want anything to do with her then neither would Akira’s family.
But Penelope was starting to face a new challenge, bills. Being at a young age and on her own there was no way she could try and pay the bills , she was sure if she used her deceased parents credit cards it would draw in wandering eyes and suspicious activity and she wanted to stay at their house for as long as she could and hope that everyone would forget about the girl who lost her parents. Surely there had to be someone her parents trusted who could help her figure things out. Though Penelope wasn’t expecting a visit from a lady that looked and resembled her deceased father.
It was then she was told that she would be moving in with her aunt and her family. Penelope didn’t have any say in the argument whatsoever , even if she argued and refused to leave, her aunt had already sold the home to someone else along with everything that was inside the house. Penelope’s life had come undone , but that was only a scratch to the surface. She soon found out that living with her aunt and cousins became a nightmare. Everything from the house to each family member had to be perfect. Nothing should be messy , unorganized or unprofessional. Living under her roof she had to obey her rules. There were 5 main rules Penelope had to follow.
RULE 1: In their house she needed to have straight A’s. Nothing below. If she did she was expected to write a 20 page essay about the topic or lesson she had a bad grade on. Why didn’t she study? What’s the lesson or message that’s trying to be explained during these consequences?
RULE 2: Everything must be neat , clear and clean. That goes for dressing herself , cleaning after herself and her penmanship when writing in Japanese.
RULE 3: She wasn’t allowed to speak any other language but Japanese. If she was caught she would receive a slap to the face. Or sometimes she would be yelled at and be told “you shouldn’t be allowed to have our family name, you’re a disgrace!”
RULE 4: She wasn’t allowed to eat until everyone else ate before her. And she wasn’t allowed to eat or have a snack after dinner. Her aunt believes that eating at night is the cause of why you gain more weight, therefore she makes sure her children don’t get obese and always have them exercising. Fat shames Penelope.
RULE 5: There are chores to be done almost everyday , and if she misses one or doesn’t do it right the first time she’s not allowed to eat for the entire day.
Despite having those insane and illegal harsh rules, her cousins, Kaoru , Koharu and Kairi tried their best to make her life less miserable by helping her with homework or studying. They shared the workload equally and always snuck some snacks to her when they could , but in the end they were caught and all 3 received punishment. After that , they started to avoid Penelope all together and acted like she wasn’t even there. They felt guilty and upset that they couldn’t be much help from defending her from their mother nor did they ever seen her this unhinged and abusive before, it was like she was a completely different person when Penelope was present, but when she wasn’t, she was her old , loving and caring motherly self. But things only went spilling downwards. Her mother’s family had finally gotten the call announcing that their second oldest child was executed brutally in her bookstore and the place was set on fire just to cover up any evidence that would’ve led the police to the suspect. Of course they asked about the child and the officers informed that she was staying with the father’s relative.
There wasn’t any way they could reach the girl or convince her to come to Belgium and live with them because both families didn’t want to have anything to do with each other , so they left her in Japan and didn’t even bother to call to check up , she was announced dead to them as well.
Penelope continued to try but struggled with everything in her new environment. The slaps came often , the belittling and aggressive behavior kept coming , every time she made a small mistake either she was chewing too loud or her scores weren’t perfect the amount of mental abuse and trauma began to take its toll. She got tired of hearing her name being yelled or spoken , she got tired of life at this point and debated on ing her parents. For 4 years she would endure all the pain , the anxiety , the breakdowns , the trauma and torment inflicted upon her. She went from a smiling and outgoing person to someone who was quiet and broken. Even Akira didn’t know what was going on with her friend who barely spoke to her , barely hung out with her and started to slowly disassociate herself from the world.
Penelope was seen as a disgrace to the Hinata family, a family that was well known and respected. But when word started to get out that their oldest son had married outside of his race , that respect and honor fell short. Little by little everyone started to shun the family for not being able to uphold ancient customs and traditions and with that Penelope’s aunt targeted the girl’s mentality and emotions , to the point where when her name was called in school “Penelope Hinata” she would instantly freeze up and start to cower in fear. Her mind and body would shut down and she would retreat into herself and be in a trance for a while or until she would black out and wake up either in the nurse’s office or at the hospital.
Soon after Penelope had dropped out of school due to the realization that if she kept shutting down whenever her name was mentioned , what was the point in staying? She got tired of waking up after a blackout, got tired of the belittling and attacks on her, she was tired of it all. When her aunt questioned her about why she wasn’t showing up to class that was the last straw. Without second thoughts , Penelope had found herself kicked out and all on her own again.
Having no place to go , Penelope ended up sitting on a park bench in the late evening sun. Her mind was too heavy to think about her next move while her heart still ached and mourned for her parents. Being so out of it and unfocused , she didn’t even realize that someone else had sat themself down on the same bench.
“Do you mind if I sit and relax for a bit?”
They asked , but they didn’t get any response from her.
“Nice evening we’re having, don’t you think?”
They asked in a cheerful tone but still only got silence as an answer.
“Why are you here alone? Where are your parents?”
When they uttered the word parents , everything came crashing down on Penelope as her silent front cracked and broke down. The person next to her continued to sit there but didn’t say anything else and had let Penelope cry her heart out and frustration. Only when she stopped and began to sniffle did they start speaking again.
“Was that a good cry?”
They asked and this time Penelope finally glanced up and found herself staring into a sea of emerald green eyes. The boy who sat next to her seemed to be a few years older than her but the way he spoke made him seem more mature for his age. His dark brown hair fell just above his eyes , he had a defined face structure , a masculine jawline , soft lips that were pulled into a warm smile and the most greenest eyes Penelope had ever seen. He held his hand out and introduced himself as Kenji. Taking in his appearance, Penelope noticed that he was wearing a black suit and tie and some dress shoes and sticking out of the front pocket of his jacket was a flier with the word “CIRCUS” written in big bold letters across the front page.
“You work for the circus?”
She asked, her silver eyes shifting from the paper to his.
“Sort of, I’m just a scout to see if anyone would want to and possibly change their life and see what it’s like to have freedom and go places you dreamed of.”
Kenji replied while rubbing the back of his neck and giving a small chuckle.
“I wished I could and have freedom and see the world.”
Penelope sighed. To see the world and be far away from this nightmare of a life , she would do anything to have that chance.
“Well, why don’t you?”
Standing up and holding his hand out , Penelope was baffled for a second as her mind started to list down the pros and cons. She was still a child, for sure she wouldn’t be able to go off and a circus! Was that even legal? But then when would she ever have this opportunity again and a chance at a new life? Her mind was saying no but her heart was screaming go, if she declined she had nowhere else to sleep and going back to her aunt’s place was a definite no.
Seeing her hesitate, Kenji gave her another charming and warm smile as he reached behind her ear and magically pulled out his card.
“If you ever changed your mind , give me a call.”
Taking the card from him , Penelope started to read what was written on it while she continued to debate on what she should do.
“I’ll be waiting to hear from you again, Poppy.”
The moment he had mentioned her nickname, Penelope quickly glanced up but Kenji was gone. Millions of questions started to swarm in her head as she desperately wanted to seek out the answers, but she had a bad feeling in her gut.
Sighing and leaning back against the bench , Penelope began to gaze at the night sky.
“Mom , dad, what do I do now?”
She whispered in sadness as the calm and clear sky began to rip open , letting its tears fall like raindrops and covering the entire city in its downpour.
For hours, Penelope still continued to sit as the rain came pelting down harder and harder , drenching her clothes and soaking her to the bone. Feeling cold , feeling numb and being filled with curiosity, she finally made up her mind. Searching for the closest pay phone or place that would allow her to use their phone , her shaky fingers had dialed his number and she didn’t even wait for him to say hello before cutting him off…
“I’ll do it.”
