Two Sides Of The Same Coin

This poem contains language that may not be suitable for younger readers.

Lucy flips a coin and watches it sail through the air,

Her life rests upon its outcome; of that fact she is most aware.

Anxiety,

A pair of unwelcome hands on her shoulder,

Reminding her that each day she gets a little older,

Reminding her that she’s running out of time to be bolder,

Causing her to sweat as her perceived world grows colder.

Excitement,

A pair of hands that shove her from behind,

Instilling the courage needed to jump in the water blind,

Breaking her free from where she is confined,

Fundamentally altering her state of mind.

Anxiety,

Crippling her every thought,

Leaving her clueless as to which battle must be fought,

Unsure of which lessons must be self-taught,

Leaving her confidence twisted and wrought.

Excitement,

The spark that jumpstarts her heart,

Rapid, uneven beats tear obstacles apart,

Bruised and abused, a clumsy work of art,

Amused and enthused, now ready to impart.

Lucy opens her palm, the outcome she refuses to share,

She flicks the coin back past her shoulder, cause who really fucking cares?

Wow this is so good, the switch between anxiety and excitement starts to feel more and more intense until all that tension is relieved in the last line "Because who really fucking cares?" Amazing.

I just don't know how you do it.

Each stanza perfectly mirrors the emotions it describes.

The first stanza was really eye catching and the last line really packs a punch.

Thanks Raven! It was actually a podcast involving a neuroscientist that inspired this one. He spoke of Anxiety and Excitement, and detailed how they were actually the same emotion, and whether it makes us feel good or bad is just the story we tell ourselves about why the feeling is there.

Think about a roller coaster. That’s a thrill and we ride them specifically to achieve that feeling of anxiety!

I’ve read about it before though it’s not just our mental state that affects which one of the two it’ll be, the symptoms are exactly the same but the hormone levels are not. I do not exactly what the difference is, but I know there is one.

Still they’re similar enough to be written off as the same

We’ll probably have to agree to disagree about the specifics
