This week’s song is

Ravka by Joseph Trapanese

This song was composed for the Netflix show Shadow and Bone, based on the Grishaverse books by Leigh Bardugo (who is an amazing author, readers please check her out)! I decided to do the song of the week on this stunning soundtrack because the books, show and soundtrack are all fabulous and masterpieces in a different way. They deserve all the appreciation there is.

Description and symbolism:

Now to get back to the song in question-this is the theme played at the very beginning of episode one and it starts out very mysterious and eerie, with plenty of strings and creepy echoes to do the job. It kicks off with the main theme and motive for the series itself that is repeated several times throughout the song and soundtrack and is brilliantly composed, always signaling some dramatic turning point or iconic character.

The song gets progressively ‘happier’, with the addition of horns and bell sounds and of course the continuous percussion to give the whole thing some volume. With headphones, it echoes around in your head and around you and sounds like a heartbeat, merging together with the other eerie instruments. It really sets the scene.

And then we get to the best part of the song, in my opinion, the climax if I may. The horns are at their loudest, all the instruments ing in, it all sounds epic and a variation of the main melody is still carried on throughout. The notes rise and rise, speed and action increasing tenfold, when suddenly-a dramatic cutoff leaves a single violin to carry the main melody for the remainder of the song, and the eerie echoes from the beginning are back.

The progression of this song is jaw dropping, and every new instrument compliments the others perfectly. Ravka will always have a special place in my heart, as it was the very first song from the soundtrack released for the public and still remains one of the best, though many others are just as stunning of course.

Ravka just seems to represent the series so well, picks up on everything at once and leaves me with fireworks exploding in my chest. I am absolutely in love with it.
