Do you always read the book before watching the adaptation?

In my case, it depends with each book.

Sometimes, I wait to read the book before watching the adaptation. Like with American Gods, when I started the tv show after the books.

Others, I want to read the book because I liked the adaptation. Like with Coraline, I read the book because of how great the movie was.

There are even sometimes that I watch the adaptation before reading the book just because I want to. I want to read It by Stephen King, but don't mind seeing the movies before.

Do you specifically avoid a movie/show because it's an adaptation and you prefer reading the book first? If you watch the adaptation first by accident does that stops you from reading the book? How strict you are about this?

I try to always read the book before watching the film it TV programme. But it doesn’t always happen! Like, I watched Ready Player One, but I haven’t read the book yet.

Definitely read before watching. It lets me imagine the characters according to my will and not according to the ones playing the role. But most of the time watching what has been read leads to a disappointing viewing in my opinion. There is always lots that is missing. My current mission is read the series before watching GOT which I've been putting off for long. But with spoilers all over the place... It is proving to be difficult :joy:

I mostly avoid watching adaptations before reading the book because I love reading books that I don’t have much knowledge about especially the twists and the like because it ruins the book for me. If I accidentally watched an adaptation before reading the book, I would most likely not read the book.

Most times, I'm ALWAYS team book before movie. I've avoided adaptations I've been extremely excited for because of this, and then they go on for years because I forget.

But there's a few cases, where I really don't give enough shit's about the adaptation or book to read the other version, or it's like Game of Thrones (for example) where it's unrealistic to wait on reading the books. I own a copy of the first book in the series, and it's taken me nearly a full year to get through three hundred pages.

Then there's the cases where I don't know it's an adaptation. Like the Maze Runner: I've seen the movie because a friend showed it to me, and I started watching The 100 before I knew it was a series. Now I'm purposefully putting off reading The 100 series until the show is done, and I'll watch the other Maze Runner movies whenever I get around to the books.

Tl;Dr: most times, always #BookBeforeAdaptation, but there's cases where I don't care or didn't know and just do one or the other in any order.

Hmm most movies I didn’t even know were a book before I watched them. I watched Percy Jackson first before I read the books and ended up liking the movie more, same with Guernsey. However, I made sure to read Ready Player One before I watched the movie and liked the book more, same with Harry Potter. I guess it depended whichever catches my eye first, the trailer to the movie or the blurb to the book.
