I find it strange how a person you've known your entire life can also be a complete stranger.

Complete and utter devastation brings people together.

Standing in front of an open casket, a lone man mourning by my side. A man I see every day of my life who still feels like a stranger.

We both stand in front of a dead loved one, we both stand in front of the same woman

Both mourning but one also feeling relief.

The woman who gave me life, the woman who raised me, but also the woman that hurt me, the one who took away the last bit of meaning in my life.

She's dead in front of me.

I peek at the man next to me.

I recognize everything about him.

His hair, his face, his clothes.

Yet the closer I look the less I recognize.

His eyes are dry and dull but his face is wet, covered in long tear streaks.

He has large bags under his eye and a messy unshaven beard.

He's completely devastated, he's cried so much there's nothing left.

So he stands still, quiet, there's nothing left for him to say, nothing left to do.

I turn away looking at the casket in front of me and grimace.

A mix of emotions whirl around my head, thinking about them scares me.

Reaching over I pinch the man's sleeve in-between my thumb and pointer finger. I hear a sniffle but don't look away from the casket.

That day I finally met the man I've lived with my entire life, the man I know nothing about.

The day I finally met my father.
