Call Me by Your Name is the story of a sudden and powerful romance that blossoms between an adolescent boy and a summer guest at his parents' cliff-side mansion on the Italian Riviera. Unprepared for the consequences of their attraction, at first each feigns indifference. But during the restless summer weeks that follow, unrelenting buried currents of obsession and fear, fascination and desire, intensify their ion as they test the charged ground between them. What grows from the depths of their spirits is a romance of scarcely six weeks' duration and an experience that marks them for a lifetime. For what the two discover on the Riviera and during a sultry evening in Rome is the one thing both already fear they may never truly find again: total intimacy.

The psychological maneuvers that accompany attraction have seldom been more shrewdly captured than in André Aciman's frank, unsentimental, heartrending elegy to human ion. Call Me by Your Name is clear-eyed, bare-knuckled, and ultimately unforgettable. [ :pencil2: ]

SPOILER FREE

It truly is a fantastic book. When I finished Percy Jackson’s books, I didn’t know what else to read, but a friend said she really recommended this book. I kinda knew about what it was (since the movie was a huge success a few years ago and I always see movie awards and I this movie being nominated in lots of categories), so I told her I would read it. And that is where everything began.

The story itself isn’t so quite interesting, and it can even be considered as a “cliche” for some, but what makes this book remarkable is how the story is told. From the very beginning, how it’s narrated catches your attention, and lever loses it in the whole book. It’s so detailed, so complex and yet so simple to understand, it’s like it has a million layers and little by little, you are discovering what comes next. You feel the ion, the desire, the love, the obsession; you feel everything. If you are a romantic, you can’t miss it.

The characters are great, I won’t say I loved them but really, I didn’t hate anyone (which I always do in books). The two main characters are trapped in a beautiful story worth telling. If you saw the movie, you’ll probably know by now the plot, but trust me when I tell you, the book is on another level. I never saw a writing style so catching at first sight like this one. Really. Fantastic.

I won’t deny there are some strange parts, but it’s all worth it; it will make your feelings explode. It’s so sad, beautiful, romantic, and overall, obsessive. You will never regret reading this.

It is set in Italy, a beautiful place and perfect location for a love story. I really loved this place but ever since this book, I love it even more (if possible). It also has some parts in Italian so you really learn a lot. It describes the setting and you imagine yourself there, submerged in this platonic love. Beautiful.

Ok, stop reading if you haven’t read this book. You’ve been warned. But if you have, then great! Now we can discuss about it. It’s an amazing book, and it’s so realistic in the way that, sometimes you fall for who you didn’t want to fall in love with. I loved how it’s set in Italy, it just makes something better. Plus, I learned a lot of Italian (I guess). There are two main things I’ll discuss.

The first one would be the peach scene. Now, why?! I mean, the story is romantic and we all knew where it headed, but I really think that didn’t have to happen. I know there will be people who weren’t bothered by it, and it probably shouldn’t bother me either, but I had never read a scene like that before, so maybe that’s why. It wasn’t bad or anything, I just felt it was not necessary. It indeed caused controversy, and I felt there was no need. I would’ve recommend this book to anyone, if it wasn’t for this detail that truly changes the mood of the story.

The second thing is the finale. Oh my god! It’s one of those endings I hate, and yet I like. It tells the story of a summer love, that’s all. It’s so tragic and beautiful. I guess it’s how it was meant to end, but it still hurts, you know? I loved it, it’s so beautifully narrated, that I’m not even mad with the author. It’s such a story worth telling, that I don’t regret reading it. had never felt this way about a book ending. It leaves you satisfied and whole but it still feels like you need more. It has so much details to the story that takes it to another level. Unlike other books, it doesn’t leave you with questions; you know exactly what happened next. I feel Oliver didn’t want to accept who he truly was, and I’m sad about it. He never truly embraces it and just follows the rules of society.

Elio on the other hand, feels he has the of his parents. I feel that’s beautiful, because he isn’t afraid of showing his love. There is one scene at the end where Oliver confesses that he never felt the of his father, and that Elio should feel lucky that he hasn’t gone through that. I loved this bit, because is real in so many ways. Although it is a great ending, it is a sad one indeed. One may think Oliver is bisexual, but I don’t think so; not really. I think he is with a woman because that’s how he feels is correct. I’m not saying he didn’t love her, yet his love is different from the one he had with Elio.

This story was never meant to last, I feel is something we know yet we don’t accept. It’s a story about first loves and embracing who you truly are. Making Oliver a foreigner makes it perfect, because he really is metaphorically speaking and quite literally. The author is a genius, and he really made it very appealing to all my senses, it’s amazing.

You can’t miss it, please just read it.

I’ve wanted to read/watch it! Whichever I could get my hands on first. It’s one of the more popular pieces of LGBT literature out there. I was excited to see your review! Now I need to go add it to my list of books to get!
