A Bullet With Butterfly Wings Came To Get You

Have you ever felt like a rat in a cage? Like you know there’s no escaping, but you keep running on that stupid little spinning wheel. That’s my life, basically. I am Briseis, I’m 21, and I am blind. In the world I was born in, that equals no respect, no real reason I could survive in this stupid ticking society. It’s always the ticking.

Tick, tick, tick.

You don’t belong, you don’t belong, you don’t belong.

When everyone around you uses sign language and you happen to be blind, there is little that people will tell you. No one trusts you, no one wants to be associated with you. Who wants to communicate with a blind person in a world of silence? “They’ll never contribute to society.” My neighbor once told my mother. My mother happened to agree. I was kicked out of the house at the age of 18. Luckily, I still had Emil.

“The world is a vampire. Sucking out your energy, sent out to drain.” It was something Emil often said. He likes being dramatic. The day I met Emil was a bad one. It was night, I had just been kicked out of my house. After a week of crying and running, not knowing where to go, he found me. He took me to his apartment and took care of me. I’ve been living with him ever since. I soon discovered he’s a musician. His favorite instrument being the drums. He has one room in his house, isolated, making sure no sound could escape. That’s where he goes to play, cry, scream. Anything he doesn’t think he can do outside.

We were happy together. He was my best friend. He was funny and kind. He liked eating breakfast for dinner and the smell of apple pie with cinnamon. We adopted a cat named Noise. She’s a cutie, black fur with brown and white spots. I was happy just living secluded, but Emil wanted change. He wanted to change the world. He taught me how to play guitar, and I learned fairly quickly. I soon decided I wanted to be a musician, like him. I could finally do something, something I was good at. ing the Songbirds ended up being the best decision I could have made. Emil and I played at different underground bars, with other Songbirds. We were happy. I was happy, finally.

I don’t think I would have lasted long if it wasn’t for Emil and his room. I wish I could have saved him like he saved me.

I was 20 when it happened. A shooting at a safely hidden place belonging to the Songbirds. No one got out without a wound. Turned out the bastards had used silent guns. They had come so swiftly, silently. Like butterflies. Deadly butterflies with guns. I had escaped with only a bullet wound in my arm. Emil didn’t make it. Suddenly, everything was silent again. Stupid, stupid silence.

I am alone now.

I enter the silent apartment. No Emil. There hasn’t been an Emil for months now, and I don’t know what to do. I need you to come back Emil. I can’t do it alone. I enter our room and scream. I scream for you, for the people who got killed and discriminated by this stupid clock world. You taught me to survive. You saved me. But now you’re gone.

A bullet with butterfly wings came to take you from me.

Now I feel like nothing but an animal, naked, cold. I can’t do this, but you’d want me to. Noise just entered the room. I’d have to keep going, if only to take care of her. I get up and touch your drumsticks. After everything I learned from you, I can do this. Maybe I can make a change. Maybe one day I’d be able scream outside, no one judging. I’d fight for that.

And I will. I could save people, like how you saved me.

But I don’t think I’ll ever be saved.
