The smell of his cologne still lingered in Rosé s closet. She hadn't sprayed it--hadn't had to. It clung to old sweaters like a memory that refused to let go.

Two years.

She whispered it each morning, like a mantra.

Two years since he left.

Two years since her heart cracked open and nothing quite fit back the same.

She relocated to a new city. New apartment, new job, new friends who had no idea how bright her smile once was. She even had a "funeral" for him in her mind--burned old letters, deleted photos, blocked his number.

Yet, every evening she checked whether he'd unblocked her as well.

Tonight, she was in a bar, drinking something hard and acting like she wasn't looking around for a specter. A man smiled at her. Kind eyes. The kind that might have meant something at one time. She smiled back, but it was cracking at the edges.

"You're not him," she breathed when he approached.

"I'm sorry?" he said, perplexed.

"Nothing. Just. wrong drink," she lied, shoving it away.

She went home in silence, the city noise too loud for her tenuous peace. At the door, she stopped, heart constricted.

Inside, all was quiet. Quiet as the day he left.

Rosé breathed out.

Perhaps it wasn't him she was missing.

Perhaps it was the part of herself who thought love lasted forever.

But she still gripped her chest as if it were bleeding.

Because to her…

This love never died.
